如果 curious natures 是人的话,那么他说: a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me (不自然的用语),而非 a habit that has made many curious natures open up to me (较为自然的用语),这就很奇怪了。
我还是觉得open up = reveal、make visible,而 curious natures 意味着古怪的性情、脾气、个性、倾向。
a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me = 这个习惯对我揭露了许多古怪的性情(脾气),或这个习惯让我见识了许多古怪的性情(脾气、个性)。

Fine, you win.

Of course there's no winners. It is a discussion, not a contest. If you want to have the last word, have it. That's what the phrase means.

Hi Loise:

Apr 19, 2013

http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/了不起的盖茨比_(2012年电影)

Isolated, yes. In the context of the story, no.
all interpretations/translations are context-sensitive.
And you must know that “人”的古怪性情 is concetually different from 古怪的“人”: 古怪性情 is a property, a character of a person, while 古怪的“人” is a person with such property. Having a curious nature does not necessarily make one a curious person (in others' eyes). A curious nature may be hidden, intendedly or not, and invisible. A person having such invisible curious natures shall not be a curious person utill those curious nature are opened up and made visible to others.
A native or an experienced speaker of such or such languange is not necessariy capable of being aware of such linguistic and conceptual nuance of words. That is the reason why lots of conceptual and linguistic misinterpretations may escape under experienced yet careless speaker's eyes.
