Three win Nobel Prize in medicine for discovery of brain's 'inner GPS'

How do we know where we are? How can we find the way from one place to another? And how can we store this information in such a way that we can immediately find the way the next time we trace the same path? This year´s Nobel Laureates have discovered a positioning system, an “inner GPS” in the brain that makes it possible to orient ourselves in space, demonstrating a cellular basis for higher cognitive function。

"Is your brain male or female?"
This one-hour series explores topical scientific issues. Dr Michael Mosley and Professor Alice Roberts investigate if male and female brains really are wired differently.
New research suggests that the connections in men and women's brains follow different patterns, patterns which may explain typical forms of male and female behaviour. But are these patterns innate, or are they shaped by the world around us?
Using a team of human lab rats and a troop of barbary monkeys, Michael and Alice test the science and challenge old stereotypes. They ask whether this new scientific research will benefit both men and women - or whether it could drive the sexes even further apart.

Heard this in the news the other day, but didn't pay too much attention ...
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2785766/China-overtakes-U-S-world-s-largest-economy-IMF-says-economy-worth-11-trillion-America-falls-second-place-time-1872.html
China 'overtakes U.S. as the the world's largest economy': IMF says economy is now worth £11 trillion as America falls into second place for the first time since 1872
• Figures show the Chinese economy is worth £11trillion, the US £10.8trillion
• The IMF estimates China's economy will be worth £16.7trillion in 2019
• The US has been the global leader since it overtook Britain in 1872
Yet there’s this caveat …
The numbers are based on ‘purchasing power parity’ (PPP) which makes adjustments for the fact that goods are cheaper in countries such as China relative to the US.
Without these adjustments for living costs, the Chinese economy is still smaller than that of the US, at £6.4trillion.
But experts have described the toppling of America after nearly 150 years by China – even on the PPP measure – as a ‘symbolic’ moment for the global economy.

當學生時,我也經常拜讀John O'Keefe教授的大作,特別是“The hippocampal and parietal foundations of spatial cognition“、 “The hippocampus as a cognitive map”及他對海馬回的研究都很值得一讀。

New Technique Offers Faster, More Accurate Way to Count Brain Cells
Method Eases Task Vital to Explaining How Humans Differ From Other Animals
Counting brain cells helps scientists explain how humans differ from other animals, but until recently, enumerating billions of cells by species was too onerous a task to tackle. That changed with the work of a Brazilian researcher who pioneered a technique that is both fast and accurate.
“We’re looking at the most basic properties of brain tissue,” said Suzana Herculano-Houzel, who developed the approach. “What is it made of, what are the rules of putting a brain together and how does the human brain compare to other brains?”

John O'Keefe

LOL
