Less is more.
Call me old-fashioned but I tend to think things get done better if I do them one at a time. I don't usually have more than 2 or 3 open at once, as I find it clutters up my toolbars.

I had just closed everything down for the night here in California when I decided to see if a new poll had been posted, so it's just one.
Usually my maximum is 6 to 8 between Firefox and IE. More than that gets confusing, so I close up and start over again.
If I'm searching terms, I may go up to as many as 15 terms behind the one I'm currently looking at.

When I'm working it somtimes turns out to be up to 8 or 9 tabs.

2 now, but I'm not working. Anywhere from 6 (standard) to 10, depending on the text. If you count other windows for tm, cat tool, text, etc, then 8 is closer to normal.
