Greetings... privyet vsemoo...

Western media refer to Russian armed security / paramilitary units operating in Chechnya with the acronym "OMON."

Apparently, the first two letter refer to "militia units/detachments" or "militia organizations."

Many thanks in advance if someone could kindly tell me what all of the OMON letters stand for and e-mail that information me at < [email protected] >.

My other PC supports Cyrillic script, and the Russian words in PDF format would be most helpful.

Ochen' spasibo...

Hi Stephen Jul 12, 2005

ОМОН is an abbreviation for отряд милиции особого назначения; something like Special Police Units or Special Police Forces.
Probably somebody will suggest a better translation.

Natalia

P.S. Militia, of course
P.P.S. Sorry, cannot email you a PDF at the moment because I have uninstalled everything (including Acrobat) in my computer while doing some "summer cleaning". But you may change the encoding in your browser for Win1251
