Being a linguist gives me access to writers from several other countries. Hooray!
And thanks to my colleagues I have access to writers in languages I do not read. Hooray, again!
My favourite of all time is the late lamented José Saramago. His books are wonderful in the original, and available in many other languages (notably in English in the superb translations of Margaret Jull Costa). | | | Michael Harris Allemagne Local time: 12:28 Membre (2006) allemand vers anglais Science fiction | Nov 10, 2010 |

Here's another vote for contemporary literature, although I do also love 19th century French literature.
I have a bit of a bias for contemporary Canadian authors. I've recently finished new books by Margaret Atwood, Anne Michaels and Kim Echlin, all different but highly recommendable!

That said, I discovered the Japanese author Haruki Murakami last summer and absolutely adored Kafka on the Shore (in its French translation). I also have a Spanish novel in its French translation sitting in line on my bedside table.
After spending a day at the computer, I cherish the opportunity to curl up in the evening with a real paper book!
Happy reading,
Jocelyne ▲ Collapse | |

Thrillers if I can, but Gianluca is right - when, exactly?
Thrillers are my big favourite, and I make sure I read at least a couple of chapters every night before I go to sleep, whatever time that may be. Otherwise, I find whatever I've been working on that evening stays on my mind all night, which isn't good and generally results in my resenting the job. | | | Thayenga Allemagne Local time: 12:28 Membre (2009) anglais vers allemand + ...
If there is time, I mostly read history books, the Americas and their original peoples from the 1400s to the present. With all that's been and still is going on: quite a thriller.
And. of course, my own, though editing them from first draft to ready-to-print copy is work. | | | Period Fiction | Nov 10, 2010 |
I also need to get my hands on a paperback and read a bit of fiction before going to sleep every day, even after several hours of translation.
A couple of years ago I read "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follet, set in 11th-Century England, and am now on the sequel "World without End", another epic 1000+ pager which continues the story through the generations.

For me it's such a well crafted work that I actually look forward every day to revisiting the wonderfully drawn characters, the setting and the development of the story. Follet has a talent for writing with simplicity while at the same time drawing the reader into the storyline and sub-plots.
Brilliant for a frustrated fiction writer!
Happy days everyone. ▲ Collapse

I try to read a bit in bed every night, too, I find it very relaxing (although I don't read thrillers, I prefer other genres), because I generally don't have time during the day.
I like novels that are mainly language-related, or about people with cross-cultural experiences, by female authors (a book I love is "Lost in Translation" by Eva Hoffman, nothing to do with the film, BTW, which I also love ). One of my favourite books when I was small (and still is) was "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit" and its sequels, by Judith Kerr. I think I have a problem - my favourite books are about WWII refugees...! | | | Anne Wosnitza Pays-Bas Local time: 12:28 Membre anglais vers allemand + ...
