I had a rough patch in 2008 and 2009, but now I am back to levels better than 2007.
Some colleagues have said that the recession didn't hit translators; I think it depends on our areas of specialization - which we just finished discussing.

more or less it has been steady, some ups and downs (see world financial crisis)
I do not understand the "I do not know" option, since we all know how much we work, don't we?

I upped my prices so that I would receive less. And guess what, it worked a treat! Gone are the days when I felt pursued. It was a crippling source of stress for me.

The volume has increased steadily after I made a concerted effort to chase prospective clients. There are certain periods in the year which are busier than others though. May is always a killer as is August whereas September is slower and I usually have a dip around January/February.
I agree with Muriel regarding the recession. People are still trying to cut costs and haggle fees. I think that is just one of the down sides to being freelance. More or less the same as Muriel-V. A big drop in income (25-30%) in the crisis year 2008, then some recovery in in 2009, while this year has been quite good so far, although I do have some new contacts and am getting less work from some of my older clients.

I have more clients and get more projects now than I did then, for sure. A few have disappeared from my radar, but I have new and better ones. There was a slow period there during the 2008 financial meltdown. I have raised my rates and now get better projects and don't do every single job that is offered to me. SO my clients have increased, I get better projects and make more money.

surprisingly, 2009 was the best year I have ever had and it will probably be difficult to equal that this year, but only because I have taken more time off to spend more time with my family.

the last year has been very good, things have steadily improved. I also did make a concerted effort to get new clients.
The summer was really slow. I hardly had any work. After two big jobs early in July, everything went dead! just a few small jobs here and there. I think everyone went on vacation! I didn't mind, since I'd saved my money and was planning to take some time off anyways! Sure enough, things picked up late in August and it's been vai vai vai since then.
