I just remembered that our regional translation association gives us a gift each year at the Christmas party. Always makes me feel appreciated.

I interpreted this question as meaning whether my family and friends give me items I need to do my work when it's my birthday or Christmas, etc.

I'd say they don't as a rule because I buy whatever I need (which isn't much) for my work when I need it.

I occasionally receive "practical" birthday and Christmas gifts from friends and family, although they (thankfully) don't make a rule of it.

From memory, I've received the following work-related gifts:

- a lovely, special edition illustrated Larousse dictionary
- a printer-scanner-photocopier (now defunct and long since replaced)
- a laptop computer
- one of those Himalayan salt lamps meant to absorb electrical thingies in the air (it was a nice though... See more

- several calendars, house plants and coffee mugs for my office

I'm still hoping someone will offer me a fountain pen some day. I hint about it every once in awhile, but so far no luck. On second thought, I'm not sure that a fountain pen would even really count as a work-related item, in any case...
