I find the fees pretty extortionate when payment by bank transfer throughout Europe doesn't cost a penny. | | | vixen Grèce Local time: 15:41 anglais vers néerlandais + ...
I have no experience with Moneybookers and I only accept payments through PayPal on rare occasions and only for smaller amounts up to about EUR 300, because the costs for receiving larger funds are way too high.
Since I am working mainly for European clients, bank transfers are virtually free. Off-hand, I think I pay EUR 0.07 per outgoing payment and EUR 0.14 per incoming payment throughout Europe.

It sounds like I'm with the wrong bank! Am I missing something? Free bank transfers throughout Europe? My bank (Barclays) charges around 25 euros each time (UK to Spain). Paypal worth when buying, not when selling services | Sep 25, 2010 |
yes, the use of Paypal within Europe in out of question: just make or receive payments via IBAN/IBAC money transfers and look at the fees. Do the same with Paypal and post your 2 results.
Paypal is very useful if you BUY a lot in the USA or other continents via eBay, Amazon etc. If you sell something (translation services) you will have to agree with your client to take 50% of the fees which is rather delicate.

Paypal is not supported here in my country, for surreptitious reasons. Many Arab translators consider Moneybookers as an (obligatory) alternative, though this situation might change over the next few months.

The abominable verification set by moneybookers will, sooner or later, turn many customers from using such indescribable service. Personally, nothing worked for verifying my account at all as holder of a single bank account (personal address + three bank accounts, including two top international banks, + sending the money to my MB account only to be refunded afterwards).
I hope that one day a service like iKobo would gain some popularity as either, at which point, I believe, it would permanently surpass them -- both. At least, it 'd be a bit better than the zero-level. ▲ Collapse | | | Mary Worby Royaume-Uni Local time: 13:41 Membre allemand vers anglais + ... Within the euro zone | Sep 25, 2010 |

Sorry, once again the UK is out on a limb here. The free bank transfers are within the euro zone (and I've received bank transfers without incurring charges from other non-euro countries too), so although I live in the UK, I have a German bank account into which all my euro payments are made.

If the funds are transferred in euros using the IBAN and BIC codes and using the Shared Cost method, your bank should charge you the same fee they would charge you for domestic bank transfers.
Please see the reference below from http://ec.europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/shopping/banking/day-to-day-banking/index_en.htm
For international payments in euros within the EU, banks should charge you no more than they would for a national transaction of the same value in euros.
...
International payments in currencies other than the euro are not subject to these provisions.
Banks in EU countries which do not use the euro must also charge the same fees for transactions in the EU as they would for a domestic transfer, if the payment or transfer is made in euros.

Without going into broad detail, I personally find Paypal to be VERY expensive, especially if you get paid, let's say, in Euros and convert the money into Dollars, converting the money once again into your local currency.
Moneybookers, on the other hand, I find to be somewhat cheaper.

Bank charges and withdrawal percentages are another heavy factor, but aren't so bad if you manage to strip out the aforementioned (and rather obscene) currency conversion charges.
Best Wishes,
Richard. ▲ Collapse | | | Yossi Rozenman Allemagne Local time: 14:41 Membre (2006) anglais vers hébreu + ... I use PayPal only for small amounts | Sep 25, 2010 |
And then I use it to pay for online services, like PROZ subscription, Web hosting, Amazon etc.
I never convert between currecies or withdraw the money to my bank account. It is too expensive and does not worth the while.

My experience has been that bank fees for transfer into the UK are higher than Moneybookers and PayPal. With bank transfers you also have to persuade the agency to pay their own bank charges.

PayPal charges a percentage, but I've found this so much better than a bank SWIFT transfer, I use PayPal accounts to transfer between my Brazilian and UK account (last time I checked, I couldn't link a Brazilian bank account to Moneybookers). PayPal to PayPal is immediate, there is just the usual period of a few days of waiting for the money to download to the bank account.
So my priorities for non-UK clients are: Moneybookers -> PayPal -> Bank Transfer.
For clients within country, bank deposit is obviously best. ▲ Collapse | | | Interlangue (X) Angola Local time: 14:41 anglais vers français + ... Bank charges | Sep 25, 2010 |
