I have no experience with Moneybookers and I only accept payments through PayPal on rare occasions and only for smaller amounts up to about EUR 300, because the costs for receiving larger funds are way too high.
Since I am working mainly for European clients, bank transfers are virtually free. Off-hand, I think I pay EUR 0.07 per outgoing payment and EUR 0.14 per incoming payment throughout Europe.

It sounds like I'm with the wrong bank! Am I missing something? Free bank transfers throughout Europe? My bank (Barclays) charges around 25 euros each time (UK to Spain). Does anyone have any more info about this? Is it a per bank thing?

yes, the use of Paypal within Europe in out of question: just make or receive payments via IBAN/IBAC money transfers and look at the fees. Do the same with Paypal and post your 2 results.
Paypal is very useful if you BUY a lot in the USA or other continents via eBay, Amazon etc. If you sell something (translation services) you will have to agree with your client to take 50% of the fees which is rather delicate.

Sorry, once again the UK is out on a limb here. The free bank transfers are within the euro zone (and I've received bank transfers without incurring charges from other non-euro countries too), so although I live in the UK, I have a German bank account into which all my euro payments are made.

Even for transcontinental payments, my expensive (special) bank account and the payment of the client's bank fees seem to be cheaper than moneybrokers or Paypal

If the funds are transferred in euros using the IBAN and BIC codes and using the Shared Cost method, your bank should charge you the same fee they would charge you for domestic bank transfers.

For international payments in euros within the EU, banks should charge you no more than they would for a national transaction of the same value in euros.

Without going into broad detail, I personally find Paypal to be VERY expensive, especially if you get paid, let's say, in Euros and convert the money into Dollars, converting the money once again into your local currency.
Moneybookers, on the other hand, I find to be somewhat cheaper.
But the key is as follows:

And then I use it to pay for online services, like PROZ subscription, Web hosting, Amazon etc.
I never convert between currecies or withdraw the money to my bank account. It is too expensive and does not worth the while.

My experience has been that bank fees for transfer into the UK are higher than Moneybookers and PayPal. With bank transfers you also have to persuade the agency to pay their own bank charges.
With Moneybookers I've only had a small flat fee. I opened an account at the request of a client, but it is now my preferred method.
