However, I used to do it, having held several shares. With the current worldwide situation it's too risky... at least for me.

Prudent investing pays off Dec 26, 2024

When I started translating full time, I resolved to put away ten percent of my initially laughable earnings into a savings account. Eventually this increased to 20% which I then invested in mutual funds to increase the yield while minimizing the long-term risk. I eventually moved into higher-yield instruments. Eventually this increased to 20% which I then invested in mutual funds to increase the yield while minimizing the long-term risk. I eventually moved into higher-yield instruments. When I became eligible for Social Security payments (the US mandatory pension scheme), I invested those funds as well. When my investment income equaled my translation revenue, I was able to consider retirement. I never considered forex, real estate syndicates or speculative investments that might jeopardize my financial security. I suppose I might have made more money, but peace of mind is important to me.

I just noticed that the the current lottery payout is over a billion dollars. Maybe I should invest $2.00 for a ticket.

All in a big lump Dec 26, 2024

Whoever prepared this question just lumped a wide variety of highly different financial vehicles into a single category...which reveals a light understanding of what stocks, crypto, indices, commodities, futures or options are.

Some of us invest in individual stocks or in stock indexes via IRA or similar retirement accounts in the United States. Just to place crypto coins in the same line makes me shudder, they're not even comparable.

This feels oddly specific Dec 27, 2024

I am actually a full-time trader, and chose to do translations recently because of the boredom and voidness. Although why this question is related to translation, is confusing. But then again, it is relatable to someone like... me. Also, as someone else mentioned, crypto is not even close to being the same category as "general investment".
