Pages vary hugely in terms of word count. They can be anything from 100 to 1000 words, and so I've voted other!

1 page = 200 - 220 words, the generally accepted length in page counts over here, at least. Hope this helps pollsters

And how do you define a page?
In most cases a lot more than 20 minutes, so I voted 'other'.
Unless it was so familiar that most of it came out as 100% matches from Trados, and in practice I only had to proofread it? Does that count? I just might manage that in 20 minutes for a regular client.
Even then, after setting up and getting the document out of Trados, it would be tight for a full page or for checking formatting, flow etc. in a new context and whate... See more And how do you define a page?

What is average, what is a page, what is familiar content, using which tools etc., etc.
Familiar content for me is content about topics I have large validated TMs. Translating one page, independent of the number of words on it, might take anything between 1 minute to 5 minutes.

Aren't we talking about proofreading, as opposed to translation? To me, 200 words in under 20 minutes is absolutely feasible, which is why I voted 11 to 15 mins. Of course, the assumption is that I must be "familiar" with the topic (and also that the text was translated by a native speaker).

No, Enrico, the question is "how long would it take ... to translate and proofread" and that is hardly possible in 11 to 15 Mins.

you got a good question there, but you cant really compare them.
It is obvious that the translation takes longer than checking it, especially if you are good in your field.

This kind of question smacks too much of production logistics. I am not a machine.
e.g. If one translator can translate and proofread 250 words in 30 minutes (= 500 words per hour), then daily production of one translator is 4,000 words. Therefore, for a 40,000 word project, one needs 10 translators, and the job will be completed in one day.

I know what my averages are. You tell me by when you want the job done, and I will tell you if I can do it.
When agreeing to do a job, I usually work on being able to complete (translate and delivery-ready) 1,800 words per day. But that does not prevent me from doing 7,600 words in two days (familiar content, no translation memory assistance), and then only 1,000 words on the third day.
I decide. Don't try to predict what I will do. That is my preserve. That is why I freelance.
I answered "Other", on account of the versatility of my piece of string.

I'd say a full "standard" page is rather something between 280 and 300 words on average (an attempt to convert 1,800 characters including spaces).

I wouldn't have posted such a vague question. Original poll doctored? (I don't write "take for you" and "proofread" (my choice=proof) Not my style. I write plainer English.)

I'm sure that my original suggestion would have been more along the lines of:
"On average, how long does it take (you) to translate 1 page of familiar content?"
in the hope that it would generate a lively discussion from translators in various fields and we could get a general idea based on various people's experiences.
Because we all have to pace ourselves when we get new work based on past, historical averages and personal experience.
My answer: 6 to 10 minutes when pushed or 10 to 15 more leisurely, and I write a very tight first draft which doesn't need much proofing later on.
But then technical stuff is much easier (for me, that is) than creative writing.

First of all, I translate from English, French, Spanish and Italian. In general, I’m faster in French and Spanish.
Then, it depends on the subject. I have a long standing client (electrical personal care appliances) whose projects are always short, easy and repetitive: one page translation and proofreading will take at the most 30 minutes. But I also translate medicine (mostly medical devices) and one page will take me at least 1 hour…
