...they are expensive nowadays...nappies, toys, milk, prams, cots, schooling, university...difficult to budget that on a translator's salary...given that 36% of responders so far don't have kids, there might be something in it. (In addition, on two of the three occasions this poll has been asked before 50% didn't have children in 2005, 40% in 2009).

On a serious note, there's nothing worse than a pushy 'stage' parent, is there?

Like Mary and Gianluca .... I want my children to have to opportunity to pursue the careers that they choose for themselves. My children are biligual so I think that would be an advantage if they want to be translators and/or interpreters but would be an advantage in many other careers too.

If that's what they want to be/do.
(Am surprised at the number of negative responses, which would seem that many freelancers are unhappy with their lot).
In an interview with Danny Kaye I heard the other day, he spoke about how sometimes people often up doing what they are meant or "destined" (if you like) to do rather than what they want to do, or what their parents would wish for them. To paraphrase P. Floyd, "Hey, parents, leave your kids alone!"

I try to teach my son English, but he often mocks me rathen than take me seriously.
I would like him to be a musician, don't ask my why, and so I bought him a guitar, but he's still too little to play it, so it's a real nuisance when he does, but there we go, they are kids.
He says he would like to be a vet, and I love animals, so maybe he got it from me.
Anyway, who knows...

mechanics, tourist guides, teachers, businessmen, actors or whatever makes them happy. It's their choice, not ours.

keeping it in the family | Mar 31, 2012 |
My son is already a freelance translator so we keep things in the family as far as possible, helping each other out when there's a big load.
My daughter wants nothing to do with translating and has opted to study medicine instead.. but she says she's going to write her thesis directly in English, not in Italian.
Taken literally, I said "no", since I don't actively want him to be one. When the time comes, I won't actively encourage him to follow in my footsteps, but I won't put him off either, so by the same token, I don't actually actively not want him to become one. Whatever makes him happy in life, and all that drippy hippy crap, y'know
My "kid" (now a grown man) is a freelance translator (Dutch and Spanish to English), of his own free choice, not because I was a pushy "stage" parent, and my parents were both freelance translators, among other things, before me. It seems to run in the family.
