Learning to live without sleep Sep 30, 2010

Having children taught me to learn to live without sleep. So now I can work far later through the night. So my productivity has gone up.

And I am not completely joking....

I suppose it might have, however when my daughter was born I was still at university, where I must admit beer consumption rather than productivity was the main priority.

My home-worker translator friends who have children have to work around their kids' timetables (school, mealtimes, play etc) but seem to get by quite well, and are able to spend more quality time with the family than those who have to travel to work ...

Productivity per day or per working hour Sep 30, 2010

My productivity per working day/week is lower - I cannot work so many hours as I used to. However due to strong motivation and awareness that I must finish work at a fixed hour my productivity per hour is higher.

Best Regards
S

Yes and no Sep 30, 2010

The actual physical number of words I can produce in a day has decreased because I have other constraints on my time. My working hours now revolve around school hours. And directly after I had my children I had less time to work, clearly. And was probably a bit all over the place in the early months!

But things have settled down now. They are 6 and 4 and I suspect my productivity is better than it ever was. I am more focussed in the time I have because I know it is limited.

changed my schedule Sep 30, 2010

I usually wake up at 530 am, so I can work till 730 when they wake up, get them ready for school and when they leave at 845 I start working again. Now I have a lunch break so I can stay with them (I didn't in the past - just a sandwich), I work straight till 630 pm when they spend time with tehir grandma, then we go out or play.
I can work longer hours if something is urgent, or I can work on Saturday and Sunday, but only when they are sleeping.

Anyway I used to sleep 9 hours

Anyway I used to sleep 9 hours per night, I sleep 5/6 now. Ah yes productivity per hour increased, overall productivity increased, but I think a can do more in a time unit than before thanks to experience.
And one mor thing is that with cost related to children (school, clothes, stationery, diapers and so on...) well you have to work more and more!!!

PS a forum for our children would be nice: "what do you think of your father/mother being a translator and working at home?" - take care and have a nice day

Children do make your life more difficult Sep 30, 2010

I don`t have children, but my sister has a daughter. I sometimes have to spend some hours with her while I need to translate several pages. I do understand now the meaning of the statement that children should be seen and not heard. I usually switch on a DVD player with some cartoons. She is instantly mesmerized, and it can last as long as the cartoon goes on.

Decreased Sep 30, 2010

Mine has definitely decreased, but my boys are still very young (1 and 3). I don't want to have them in full-time childcare at this age, so I have managed to strike a fairly good balance with part-time childcare and working in the evenings. I have also raised my rates quite a lot over the last few years, so my takings haven't really gone down very much

It can be really tough when I have a very busy period of work, but

It can be really tough when I have a very busy period of work, but like someone else said, I am learning to live without much sleep!

Despite the decrease in my productivity, I am very happy with my job and get to spend a lot more quality time with my family than some of my friends. I really like the flexibility of being freelance and being able to work around other things.

My kids would have a blast answering this one

As for the poll, I selected "other" since I changed career once my kids where there to become a translator. And I don't regret it, even if it sometimes mean working in the evening / at the weekend. My life is much more balanced than it was before

Have a nice day!

I became a full-time free-lancer when my son was 19, and productivity had nothing to do with him!

I started spending more and more time translating when he was an adolescent, to let him have "more space" and independence.

Productivity increased with the computer, even more with the Internet, and with experience of course. Unfortunately, it is now slowing down a bit, with age

Increased! Sep 30, 2010

As a mom of 2, I had to earn more and organise my time better. Therefore, my overall productivity increased: I invested my time and money in CATs, decided NOT to work on weekends and my rates went up. I'd even say my kids have made me more successful.

I became a translator when my daughter was 11. Thus, the early years, which is I believe the point of the survey, did not affect my life as a translator.

Answers split evenly, but... Sep 30, 2010

At the moment, the Yeses and the Nos seem evenly split, but I wonder if it's the same across the sexes? I have a feeling women/mothers will have overwhelmingly replied "Yessss".. Men find it easier, generally speaking, to shut themselves off and get on with what they're doing. As a mother, I can't shake off the duty to have a warm meal on the table every day (or almost!), to be constantly on the alert when my kids are around, etc.
