Hello Everyone,
I would like to know if there are translators here who have started with translation of written opinions as a beginner, and has been doing relatively well in this field.
I work for the Japanese to English pair, and I was doing translation of written opinions, and had begun this genre only lately, but somehow I have not been able to cope up with understanding the context, due to which I have come back to square one.

I work for the Japanese to English pair, and I was doing translation of written opinions, and had begun this genre only lately, but somehow I have not been able to cope up with understanding the context, due to which I have come back to square one.
Until now, I have only been able to get a fair idea of the scope of translation, but each WO seems to be different, and except for a few set phrases, the rest seem to be just going on and on and makes it difficult to understand.
So, I wanted to know if anyone has started from scratch and how can I equip myself in learning translation of WO so that I can reach a level where I may make minor mistakes, and not like at present where I end up making major errors...
Is understanding the context the only key to improving ? And if we can practice or take some training, are there any links or references or sites which can help for the same?
I was somehow enjoying my work of referring the cited documents and trying to understand each PO, but since I am not able to deliver up to the mark, this has only made me all the more determined to learn this genre...
Any help from experienced people/beginners is really appreciated !

I am afraid I cannot help, but could you please explain what is "written opinions" as a translation field? What kind of material do you translate?
(I hope I am not the only one at a lost whith this...)

I am so sorry, I thought I had mentioned the genre....
I was referring to the Written Opinions in the patents field....(特許分野→見解書）
I will quickly edit the same in my original post as well....

What is your background for this? In my opinion, this is probably one of the most difficult fields of translation and one where mistakes can have disastrous consequences. Unless you are a patent lawyer, it is definitely not a good place to start for beginners.
My advice would be to first get a few years of experience in general translation and then gradually move into legal translation. Learn as much as you can about legal translation and patents and only then start specializing in ... See more What is your background for this? Hi Tina,
I have a commerce & economics background, and in the course of translation, I have mainly worked in the IT field. I know both fields are apart, but I ended up in the IT field... ! In the process, I have done a few legal translations but not as difficult as patents.
I have a good number of years experience in translation in the IT field. So its not that I have never done translation, and it was 2 years ago that I happened to come across some one who said that even beginners in Patents field can apply. And so I applied, and they used to send feedback regularly. And the translation was being checked by a reviewer before delivery. But its just that each feedback was so different from the previous one. So I felt that I should get down to the roots and find out how to go about learning translation in this field.
So when you mentioned "learn as much as you can about legal translation and patents"...this is exactly the stage where I am in now, and I am trying to find out if anyone else who would have sailed in the same boat as mine and doing good now...Or is it that only who are lawyers or have something related to the legal field do these kind of patents translation?
I just wish I knew what is the route I need to take to learn the intricate details...Maybe there is no one formula, but there must be some kind of a structure to go through to learn ??

Do a patent search in these patent databases for the past patent specifications. Read the patent specifications and drawings before translating the office actions and the examiner's opinions.
Get yourself familiar with the different IP laws, polices, and application procedures in different countries. Examples are the differences between patents and utility models, the different classification and standards, and the different application and examination procedures regarding the application of patents and utility models in different countries. ▲ Collapse
