Moi aussi. | | | No pressure? | May 28, 2013 |
As the sole source of income for my family, I constantly feel pressure to work better, faster and at higher rates. Even when I don't have any active projects, I have a list of side projects or improvements that I have to take care of, training that I need to receive and software that I need to learn.

I don't think I've stopped being under pressure since I started as a freelancer!
...and it's five years now! I work under the pressure of the deadline, and I do other things (training, marketing, etc...) under the pressure of the work...

I work better under pressure (in terms of how much time it takes to get stuff done), but in terms of quality this is best when combined with some degree of flexibility to take extra time if quality requirements dictate it. | |

... And, truth be told, I like the thrill of moderately large overnight jobs (e.g. 5000 words) that pay decently. My favourite kind of job is a rush job that expects high quality nonetheless (which is where I could probably say I specialise by now), but comes with the understanding that arguments about style will generally not be had, minor imperfections (perceived or real) will not be brought up, and so on. That's the setting where I thrive.
What I categorically dislike, though, is that kind of pressure which comes down to someone being basically rude. That's a no-no. I don't take it from anybody, although my reaction is milder when that other person is under pressure. I expect every linguist to be a lady or gentleman and act accordingly. I eventually offer a lecture if the opposite is the case.
