Getting experience

I've read in various places that a good way of getting experience is to offer voluntary translations and/or find a "mentor", who will check translations for you.
Has anyone got any tips on how to find jobs/people in this way?
I'm already doing a 6month work placement in a small translation company but don't feel that it is giving me what I need.

Your question is a bit hard to answer, because most people would say that a work placement in a translation company in your source language country ( Germany) would be the ideal way to gain experience and find a mentor.

As you are finding that this is not the case, then perhaps what you need is a placement at a larger or more helpful translation company.
