I wonder how many vendor managers there are among us so that the answers to this question can have a modicum of validity?

When I worked as a PM we already had a rather large database. If we had to look for new translators, we would look up members in the Institute of Linguists or the Institute of Translation and Interpreting.

Apparently, not ProZ.com Dec 17, 2024

By the looks of it, they no longer go to ProZ.com, which has been very, very quiet in the past couple of years: few jobs, even fewer conversations in the forums, the same old look since 1999 with a never-ending 'facelift', Plus subscription benefits that were promised but never materialized…

CVs Dec 17, 2024

When I had my own translation agency a long time ago, I posted an ad on a paper requesting CVs from translators --I got hundreds. Plus, in Spain, you can find sworn translators on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs web.

So where do they go, in your opinion?

ITI directory / referrals Dec 20, 2024

I have very little data to answer the question authoritatively, but I have been found occasionally via the ITI directory (e.g. a publishing company approached me for a book translation via that route in November) and at other times via referrals from other translators.

I did get one good direct client (and a lot of insulting offers) from my ProZ listing in the past but I haven't been a full member for a few years now.

I did get one good direct client (and a lot of insulting offers) from my ProZ listing in the past but I haven't been a full member for a few years now.

I've also had a decent response rate from very targeted emails to agencies working in my specialism (we don't always agree about rates/conditions but that's another story).

I think most clients will turn first to translators they have used in the past - the vast majority of my work comes from existing clients anyway.
