प्रिय मित्र मित्रा जी,

भारतीय भाषाओं में उद्धृति चिन्ह का प्रचलन अंग्रेजी व्याकरण से हुआ है। अब उद्धृति चिन्ह एक हो या युग्म - इसके बारे में स्पष्ट रूप से कोई निर्दिष्ट नियम तो है नहीं । लेकिन हम यह जरूर जानते हैं कि जब किसी की उद्धृति दी जाती है तब एक (‘ ‘) और जब उसी उद्धृति के अन्दर कोई तीसरी उद्धृति दी जाती तो युग्म (“ “)चिन्ह का प्रयोग होता है।
इसके अलावा , साधारण रूप से ब्रिटिश अंग्रेजी में एक तथा अमरीकी अंग्रेजी में युग्म उद्धृति चिन्ह का प्रयोग होता है।
