Impossible to open PDFs in Trados Studio

I tried to open several PDFs in Trados studio but I systematically get the following error message :
"error when pre-tweaking file : exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation".
Could anyone translate what this means in plain english and tell me how to remedy the problem?

Hi Lola,

This is a problem we have seen with the 1.0 release of Studio, but I believe it has been resolved in the SP1. This is currently still only a Beta version but we expect it to be released very shortly.

I hope so, yes. But this is not available yet, although it is due very soon. I would recommend waiting for this rather than take the Beta version at this stage, unless your task is urgent? If it is I can contact you offline and explain how to do this.

Well, I very often work from PDFs, that is the very reason why I upgraded to Studio so it would be nice if I could use it. Any idea when soon means?

PDF files and SP1 Sep 30, 2009

PDF conversion was not so successful in version 1 but with SP1 it is much more better. Normaly, after converting a PDF file in Studio, I export it as a word file, perform some editing work to correct segments, and then reimport the word file to Studio. It is interesting that Studio's pdf conversion is better than Solid Converter, interesting because SDL uses SolidConverter's technology for pdf conversion.

Same problem with Studio 2009 SP2 Apr 14, 2010

Hi everybody,

I have just upgraded to Studio 2009 SP2 (mainly because of PDF and Open Office files, and I get the same messagen when trying to open PDF files.

I have tried a lot of times, checked if the files were open (they were not) and I still can't open PDF files. Could anyone please give me an explanation of why this happens?

It can only work with .pdfs that were created on a PC from Word documents Apr 14, 2010

There is no way to process scanned .pdfs without first using OCR.

Most of the .pdfs that agencies send out to translators are scanned .pdfs (pictures, not text). Either they are good enough for OCR conversion to work, or the poor quality ones need to be re-typed (hopefully not by the translator, may I add. This would be the job of the agency's client, or otherwise the agency's own secretary).

Cannot open PDF files created from a Word Document Apr 16, 2010

Hi,

I created a PDF file from a word document using PDFCreator (printer), tried to open it with Trados and it didn't work.

I also created a PDF file using OpenOffice, tried to open it with Trados and it didn't work.

Do you mean that only PDF files created with the Adobe Writer Professional will work?

However, both times the source segments have contained so many formatting tags that it makes translating very difficult. These formatting tags are and appear around individual words, sometimes even as part of two words.

Is this a problem that others have found?

What is causing it?

Is it down to the usual "poor formatting" on the part of the original document's author? I am less inclined to accept this as the reason now, though, as it has happened to me twice with different pdfs from entirely different authors.

Is there anyway to work around this?

I'd appreciate your views and comments!

studio can cope with pdfs that were originally docs but if you have pdfs that are complex (i.e. scanned images, etc.) you must convert them yourself with an ocr and then reformat with Word before opening them in Studio.

Basically, you have to remove all the font and spacing changes in Word before opening the file in Studio. You can use codezapper to do this, or remove all format (if this is feasible) in Word, or adjust spacing by hand (font>space between characters).

I was under the impression, however, that the PDFs I received were originally created in Word and not scanned in. However, damg might be on to something...

I suspect the author of the original PDFs in my case just printed the file using a ghostscript PDF creator (such as PDFCreator, for example).

Does anyone have any more details about this? Can SDL confirm this suspicion?

Hi,
one of possible reasons may be that you have localized Office installed on English system - or just some component is not properly installed. Can you change your Regional Settings (Start\Control Panel\Regional and Language Settings to English United States? This seems to be official recommendation from Microsoft.
