: Viewed underwater in an aquarium tank. M. senile var. dianthus is the variety that has "carnation/pink" as part of its name (due to its analogous appearance). The sea pinks that I know grow on cliff-tops, not underwater.

Best to keep the common name, since the French does not use the formal Latin name. The 'géant' suggests that we're probably not talking about 'pinks' here.

: nice to see writeaway coming to your defence:) nothing is impossible... Indeed I have now found evidence for both pinks and large carnations as possible translations. However, it seems that the original French text is incorrect!
