For Clive, yes it is at Nausicaa.
liz askew Aug 6, 2012:
Yes, indeed, the original French is incorrect.

Clive Phillips Aug 6, 2012:
Is this at Nausicaa at... ...Boulogne?
liz askew Aug 6, 2012:
nothing for "oeillet de mer géant" how odd
liz askew Aug 6, 2012:
hI
The French seems to be incorrect then, if you are all saying this is a giant plumose anemone.

neutral liz askew : this has nothing to do with anemones

I think it does....
agree Rachel Fell : http://www.sciencephoto.com/media/365934/view http://doris.ffessm.fr/fiche2.asp?fiche_numero=130 (I don't they're called sea pinks in Eng., tho' the 2nd link says they are)

agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Or "sea pinks" (not common). Cf. Weinberg, Guide Nature L'Atlantique, la Manche et la mer du Nord, Ed Nathan 2004., p176. (Bible for my FFESSM marine biology certificates). Idem Turquier et al, Fonds sous-marins de la Bretagne, Ed Ouest-France, 1998., p69

agree John Speese : Definitely talking about an animal and not a plant; this site calls them plumose anemones or just Metridium anemones: www.boydski.com/diving/photos/metridium.htm

Thank you John
agree Clive Phillips : Viewed underwater in an aquarium tank. M. senile var. dianthus is the variety that has "carnation/pink" as part of its name (due to its analogous appearance). The sea pinks that I know grow on cliff-tops, not underwater.

Large flowered carnations – one big flower per stern;

But I'm not sure about this.
Peer comment(s):

neutral liz askew : this is a different flower to the "'oeillet géant". see the picture in my references, however I have found another picture of "oeillet géant".

Yes, the picture in your first link is convincing, but Google Image shows CARNATIONS. Very confusing!
neutral Jocelyne Cuenin : difficile à imaginer dans un bassin

Point taken.
neutral Clive Phillips : I don't know any carnations or pinks that grow underwater.

large-flowerd carnations

Best to keep the common name, since the French does not use the formal Latin name. The 'géant' suggests that we're probably not talking about 'pinks' here.

'flowered', of course. (typo)
Peer comment(s):

neutral liz askew : nice to see writeaway coming to your defence:) nothing is impossible... Indeed I have now found evidence for both pinks and large carnations as possible translations. However, it seems that the original French text is incorrect!

Yes, I see that this makes sense if we are talking about the wild flower. Is this the case? Odd that you have two different responses for two identical suggestions.
agree writeaway : I don't agree but I also don't agree with a disagree here and a friendlier neutral elsewhere to the identical answer. this should balance that out.

agree cc in nyc : pinks... Your first link sure looks like a pink to me! But I couldn't launch the rightplant link. (Also – oddly – your answer was not visible when I posted mine.) // And yet, Google Image for "oeillet géant" shows CARNATIONS! Now I'm confused

Thank you, though I believe "dianthus giganteus" is the botanical name, as "pink/s" is somewhat general
neutral Rachel Fell : I think it's about sea creatures, though

neutral Jocelyne Cuenin : Je pense comme Rachel : les oeillets sont des plantes de rocailles, je ne pense pas que les oeillets (carnations / pinks) soient des plantes aquatiques
