alertness

Not being native, I wouldn't use a higher confidence level, but 'éveil' for a baby definetely means alertness'. IMHO, it is a part of the psychological development.

It can be judged at a glance, whereas psychological development needs testing.

Définition d'"éveillé" dans le TLFi :
C. Plein de vie, de vivacité. (Quasi-)synon. alerte.

thank you!
agree :::::::::: (X) : yes definitely alertness well done

Helen had suggested it already!
agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : I had prepared something on alertness, yes it is of course part of psychological development, the "awareness and reactivity" being important extensions to the suggestion by Drmanu49.

Thank you Nikki, but the French does mention alertness, not awareness and reactivity, so to me psychological development is an interpretation, not a translation

writeaway: 10:01 Dec 31, 2006: can you please show how it's used in your context?

writeaway: 11:08 Dec 31, 2006: is it a marketing text or a more academic text? ie do you need English marketing hype or is it more straightforward?
Silvia: 11:49 Dec 31, 2006: I found it in a brochure about raising children, so I think it could be a marketing text.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : In the context cited, the noun "éveil" is being used to describe how the infant reacts to stimuli. // From a grammatical point of view, it is clear.

This is not at all obvious from the context.//Context = HIV drugs. No mention of reaction to stimuli whatsoever in the context.//I completely disagree with your point.
neutral Fiorsam : "stimulation" is what's used to measure the "alertiness"

"éveil" in french has a huge semantic field.

"sa croissance staturo-pondérale ainsi que l’éveil est normal à l’âge de 12 mois" definitely suggests that this was written after a thorough examination/assessment and NOT just a glance.
