Description:
The language adaptation and localisation industry is at crossroads, and leading a successful freelance career as a linguist is becoming increasingly challenging, what with the rise and increasing reliability, relevance and accuracy, of CAT Tools and Machine Translation software. Engineers are developing new ones every day in every time zone. Qualified and experienced scientists dominate the Life sciences and technical fields, literary projects are few and far between, and and hosts of experienced and specialised linguists dominate the market. Those linguists whose lifelong fascination for languages stems from a passion for the Creative may find themselves waiting for a train than seldom stops to pick them up. Moreover, a conversion to the more practical side of the profession might not have been the dream of your childhood. So what now? How do you move forward? Maybe you've heard the words 'transcreation', 'copywriting' and 'marketing adaptation' but these all seem really wishy-washy and you are not sure how serious they really are. Sound like you? This talk is for you. 20+ years of experience in the field are slowly leading me to the conclusion that the future is in the areas where machines will most struggle to keep up with the human: creative language adaptation. This talk will focus on the area of marketing language adaptation.
Learning objectives:
To introduce transcreation and copywriting to freelancers and to explain the point of it all, what differentiates transcreation from localisation and translation, and what Marketing Implementation agencies expect from a good copywriter.
Constance considers herself a Third Culture kid and a life long student. Born in Paris, France, she is a native French speaker, and a general lover of languages, travels, music and academia. Constance holds a Certificate in Translation from the British Institute in Paris, a Diploma in Translation from the Chartered Institute of Linguists, a Masters in Research (Language, Discourse and Communication) from Kings College London.
She also holds a PGCE/DTLLS, the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, and taught French and Translation to adult learners in a FE college for three years. She was a translator and interpreter for over 15 years and has been working as a Translation Team leader and Account Director in a Marketing and Communications agency for the last 5 years.
