Texte source - anglais The bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers in September 2008 will probably go down as the single most spectacular event in the humbling of Wall Street. But it was the near-collapse of Bear Stearns, six months earlier, that first exposed the fragility of America’s seemingly mighty investment banks, perched atop mountains of debt and dangerously reliant on short-term funding. And it was Bear that brought the first serious reminder, after years of excess, of Walter Bagehot’s dictum that if you have to prove you are worthy of credit, your credit is already gone.
The smallest of America’s top tier of independent investment banks was felled by a massive run on its liquidity, as clients and trading partners fled over just a few days, fearing Bear would be unable to meet its obligations. As one executive said, it was “24 hours from solvent to dead”.

Texte source - anglais Tongariro was New Zealand's first national park, created following a gifting of the sacred central North Island peaks to the nation in 1887 by Paramount Chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV (Horonuku). Subsequently the park has been inscribed on the World Heritage List for its natural landscape and associative cultural landscape features.
Tongariro National Park attracts visitors either to walk over the many tracks around the mountains during the summer or to ski the snow clad slopes in winter. Kaimanawa Forest Park on the eastern boundary of the conservancy is a vast (77,348 hectares) largely unmodified expanse of native forest, shrublands and tussock grasslands and is a mecca for hunters. Lake Taupo and its tributaries is recognised worldwide for the quality of its trout fishing.

Texte source - anglais Capturing the enemy: taking the CO2 out of emissions
For a long time now, fossil fuels have been regarded as the bad guy of energy supply because they pollute the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. However, we will rely on this convenient source of energy as long as “green” alternatives are not yet ready to replace them.
As the results of the CASTOR project show, fossil fuels don’t have to be the villain of the piece. Scientists are investigating various strategies for minimising the release of CO2 emissions. One such technique involves catching the CO2 before it makes its way into the atmosphere, and then storing it safely away deep in the earth, far from us and our daily environment.
Here, the CASTOR project has made a big step forward. The pilot facility built by the project at a coal-fired power station in Denmark is the largest in the world. It is able to capture as much as one tonne of CO2 every hour - 90_% of the CO2 that would have otherwise been released into the atmosphere. It does so by passing the flue gases through a liquid in which the CO2 dissolves. The pure CO2 is then extracted from the fluid through heating.
The 30-partner team involving 10 EU Member States plus Norway also used geological modelling, reservoir simulation and seismic simulation to illustrate how the captured CO2 can be safely stored underground.
The project has been so successful that research teams around the world are replicating the unique CASTOR facility when conducting their own carbon capture and storage trials.

Μια από αυτές τις στρατηγικές έχει να κάνει με την αιχμαλώτιση του διοξειδίου του άνθρακα προτού αυτό έρθει σε επαφή με την ατμόσφαιρα και την ασφαλή αποθήκευσή του στα έγκατα της γης, μακριά από μας και το καθημερινό μας περιβάλλον.
Το πρόγραμμα CASTOR έχει κάνει μεγάλη πρόοδο σε αυτό το θέμα. Οι πειραματικές εγκαταστάσεις του προγράμματος, οι μεγαλύτερες στον κόσμο, βρίσκονται στη Δανία, σε ένα σταθμό που πυροδοτείται από κάρβουνο. Έχουν τη δυνατότητα να αιχμαλωτίσουν μέχρι και ένα τόνο διοξειδίου του άνθρακα κάθε ώρα, το 90% δηλαδή του CO2 που θα είχε απελευθερωθεί διαφορετικά στην ατμόσφαιρα. Αυτό επιτυγχάνεται με το πέρασμα των καυσαερίων μέσα από ένα υγρό που προκαλεί τη διάλυση του διοξειδίου του άνθρακα. Το καθαρό διοξείδιο του άνθρακα εξάγεται στη συνέχεια από το υγρό δια της θέρμανσης.
Η 30μελής ομάδα που αποτελείτο από 10 κράτη-μέλη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και τη Νορβηγία χρησιμοποίησαν επίσης γεωλογικά μοντέλα, εξομοιωτές υδροταμιευτήρων καθώς και σεισμικούς εξομοιωτές για να αποδείξουν καλύτερα πως το αιχμαλωτισμένο διοξείδιο του άνθρακα μπορεί να αποθηκευτεί με ασφάλεια στο υπέδαφος.
Το πρόγραμμα είχε τόσο μεγάλη επιτυχία που πολλές ερευνητικές ομάδες ανά τον κόσμο αντιγράφουν τις αποκλειστικές εγκαταστάσεις του CASTOR, προκειμένου να διεξάγουν τα δικά τους πειράματα για την αιχμαλώτιση και αποθήκευση του άνθρακα.
