Further, history-based approaches to these explanations have often prioritized North-South relationships. This methodological choice is not neutral: by using the relationship with Europe as an explanatory matrix for skewed trajectories, the analysis sidesteps an important part of Sub-Saharan Africa’s external economic relations. The fact that the Swahili Coast had more than a millennium of exchanges with Arabia, Persia, and the Indian subcontinent prior to Europeans coming onto the scene is not without impact on the ways in which Africa has developed. Nor is it insignificant that black slaves were found in China as early as the 8th century or that some of the gold mined in Sudan ended up in India…

Incapables de fonctionner normalement, celles-ci délaissent leurs centres d’intérêt et éprouvent de la tristesse et un désespoir durables. Plus qu’une simple déprime qui dure quelques jours avant de se résorber, la dépression clinique est en fait une maladie qui perturbe l’organisme, l’humeur, les pensées et les agissements et qui a des conséquences sur les habitudes alimentaires, les sentiments et la réflexion, la capacité à travailler ou à étudier et les interactions avec les autres. Souvent, les personnes atteintes confient qu’elles « ne se reconnaissent plus ».
La dépression clinique n’est pas un signe de faiblesse, et n’est pas causée par un manque de volonté. Il ne suffit pas aux personnes atteintes de « se secouer un peu » pour aller mieux; à cause de leur état, elles n’ont souvent ni la motivation ni la capacité nécessaires pour demander de l’aide. La maladie peut ainsi durer des semaines, des mois, voire des années, et entraîner des pensées suicidaires ou mener à des tentatives de suicide.
La dépression clinique touche des gens de tous les âges, peu importent leur sexe, leur origine ethnique, leur culture ou leur religion. It has an impact on eating habits, feelings, and thoughts, as well as the ability to work or study and interactions with others. People with the disease often confide that they “no longer recognize themselves”.
Clinical depression is not a sign of weakness and is not caused by a lack of willpower. Sufferers can’t simply “snap out of it” to feel better. Given their condition, they often have neither the motivation nor the capacity to ask for help. The illness can therefore last weeks, months, or even years, and lead to suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts.
Clinical depression affects persons of all ages, regardless of their sex, ethnic origin, culture, or religion. Each year, more than 17 million American men and women are affected. Although it is widespread, screening and treatment for it are often nonexistent.
Various types and degrees of clinical depression have been identified. Most individuals who ask for help and receive appropriate treatment see an improvement in their condition within months; many even feel better within weeks.
Clinical depression has different manifestations. It can suddenly appear, or get worse over a period of weeks, months, or years.

Bio
With a background in diplomacy, I enjoy translations in a wide variety of fields including education and the social sciences in an international context.
I currently work as a freelance translator and French tutor in Calgary, the proud home of the Calgary Stampede. I am a certified member of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta (ATIA) and hold a PhD in Migration and Diaspora Studies.
I started off my professional translation career as a part of my duties at UNEP in 2000 and at the CARICOM Secretariat from 2001-2004. However, it was while working at the World Bank from 2005-2008 as a full-time translator that I was mentored by senior translators (with all of the humbling that entails!)
I've been freelancing ever since and work from French and Spanish into English, with a very strong preference for French.
I also enjoy working from Jamaican Patois (a.k.a Patwa or Jamaican Creole) into English, particularly for law enforcement and anthropologists.
I look forward to receiving even more language requests from all corners of the earth in future!
