Background:
My father is French but grew up in London and my Mother is British but grew up in Paris.
I grew up in NYC and was educated in the French school system, from Nursery School to the French Baccaularéat (passed with Honors, Languages section, Latin/English/Spanish).
My first words were in both languages.
I learned to read in French and in English at the same time, taught at home by my mother at age 4 .
In our household we spoke both languages, depending on the company and the circumstances. Each year we spent our three summer months in France.
I lived and worked in Paris for several years as a journalist for Women's/Fashion magazines (researching, writing & editing) before eventually returning to the US and later to the UK to continue my education: a BA in Linguistics in NYC (Major in Romance languages) followed by a post-graduate degree in English & French Translation in London (I specialized in Legal Translation)
I also passed the IOL Diploma in Translation (English to French, Law and Literature).
I worked for over 4 years as a Court Interpreter/ legal translator for the NYC court system-mainly from French to English.
For the past 3 years, I have been living in Paris and working as a French to English and English to French translator.
I've worked on general press articles, brochures and catalogues for the Tourism industry,
psychological articles and tests, studies/surveys/statistics, business correspondence and legal certificates etc.
Lately, however, most of the work Ive been doing has been in French to English and has been business-related: financial documents/reports, sale mandates, legal contracts and documents for lawyers, insurance and real estate companies, M&A and consulting firms.
I always take whatever time is necessary to research subject matter and appropriate terminology.
I'm familiar both with UK and US English.
In French, however, I only work into "French from France" (no Canadian)
Working at night or on weekends is not a problem.
In my spare time, I'm a volunteer translator for Translators Without Borders/Traducteurs Sans Frontières (French to English) and the Institut Métapsychique, Paris (English to French). |
