Vitamin C is found in broccoli, Brussel sprouts, citrus fruits, green pepper, papaya, potatoes, spinach, strawberry and tomatoes.
Function:
Vitamin C is a powerful exogenous antioxidant that reduces the presence of free radicals. Vitamin C maintains the well-being of capillaries, gums and teeth. It also prevents scurvy while maintaining the immune system functional. Furthermore, it allows the formation of collagen in conjunctive tissue. Among the other functions of Vitamin C we find: the increase of calcium absorption, production of hemoglobin and red blood cells in the spine, assistance in the functioning of the pituitary gland.
Dosage:
75-90 mg per day or 1-3 g per day for athletes.
Toxicity:
Vitamin C is not toxique. A massive ingestion (10 g) of this vitamin however cause unwanted side effects, such as diarrhea, frequent diuresis and skin rash.
Relation to physical activity:
No enhancement of athletic performance. Vitamin C may considerably reduce fat intake but has no effect on performance.
Scientific literature:
Many studies on the effect of exercise, training et consumption of Vitamin C exist. (Am J Clin Nutr. 2000 Aug;72(2 Suppl): 647S-52S).

Abstract
As part of the blood-brain-barrier, astrocytes are ideally positioned between cerebral
vasculature and neuronal synapses to mediate nutrient uptake from the systemic circulation. In
addition, astrocytes have a robust enzymatic capacity of glycolysis, glycogenesis and lipid
metabolism, managing nutrient support in the brain parenchyma for neuronal consumption.
Here, we review the plasticity of astrocyte energy metabolism under physiologic and pathologic
conditions, highlighting age-dependent brain dysfunctions. In astrocytes, glycolysis and
glycogenesis are regulated by noradrenaline and insulin, respectively, while mitochondrial ATP
production and fatty acid oxidation are influenced by the thyroid hormone. These regulations are
essential for maintaining normal brain activities, and impairments of these processes may lead
to neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. Metabolic plasticity is also associated with
(re)activation of astrocytes, a process associated with pathologic events. It is likely that the
recently described neurodegenerative and neuroprotective subpopulations of reactive
astrocytes metabolize distinct energy substrates, and that this preference is supposed to explain
some of their impacts on pathologic processes. Importantly, physiologic and pathologic
properties of astrocytic metabolic plasticity bear translational potential in defining new potential
diagnostic biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets to mitigate neurodegeneration and
age-related brain dysfunctions.

robuste capacité enzymatique de glycolyse, de glycogenèse et de métabolisme de lipides,

du cerveau. Nous révisions ici la plasticité du métabolisme d’énergie de l’astrocyte sous conditions physiologiques et pathologiques, mettant en lumière les dysfonctionnements du
cerveau en fonction de l’âge. Dans l’astrocyte la glycolyse et la glycogenèse sont régulés par la
noradrénaline et l’insuline respectivement, tandis que la production d’ATP mitochondriale et
l’oxydation d’acide gras subissent l’influence de l’hormone thyroïde. Ces régulations sont
essentielles afin de maintenir l’activité normale des fonctions du cerveau, les déficiences des
mécanismes de celui-ci pouvant mener à un déclin cognitif et neurodégénératif. La plasticité
métabolique est également associée à la (ré)activation d’astrocytes, un processus associé à
des événements pathologiques. Il est probable que les sous-populations d’astrocytes réactifs
neurodégénératifs et neuroprotectifs récemment décrits métabolisent des substrats énergiques
distincts, et que cette préférence expliquerait certains de leurs impacts sur des processus
pathologiques. Il est important de noter que les propriétés physiologiques et pathologiques de la

Texte source - français Les noyaux de toutes les cellules humaines, à l’exception des gamètes, contiennent 23 paires de chromosomes — le nombre diploïde. Chaque paire comprend un chromosome provenant de la mère et un chromosome provenant du père. Chaque chromosome homologue — chacun des chromosomes qui forment une paire — contient des gènes qui régissent les mêmes caractères. Par exemple, si un chromosome contient un gène pour les cheveux, son homologue contiendra aussi un gène pour les cheveux, dans la même position. On appelle allèles les formes alternatives d’un gène qui codent pour le même caractère et occupent la même position dans une paire de chromosomes homologues. Par exemple, un allèle d’un gène qui code pour les cheveux peut déterminer si ces cheveux seront grossiers, tandis qu’un autre codera pour les cheveux fins. Une mutation (mutare = changer) est un changement permanent transmissible dans un allèle qui produit une variante du même caractère.
Le rapport entre les gènes et l’hérédité est mis en évidence lorsqu’on examine les allèles intervenant dans une maladie appelée phénylcétonurie. For example, if a chromosome contains a gene for hair, its homologous counterpart will also contain a gene for hair, in the same position. What we call alleles are alternative forms of a gene that code for the same trait and occupy the same position in a pair of homologous chromosomes. For example, an allele of a gene that codes for hair can determine if the hair will be coarse, while another will code for finer hair. A mutation (mutare = to change) is a permanent transmittable modification inside an allele that produce a variant of that same trait.
The link between genes and heredity is highlighted when we examine alleles involved in an illness called phenylketonuria. Those affected by phenylketonuria (see above) are unable of fabricating the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. The allele that codes for the phenylalanine hydroxylase is symbolized by the letter P while the mutated allele, that does not produce the functional enzyme, is symbolized by the letter p. The diagram of image 29.14, named Punnett square, shows possible combinations of gametes from two parents who each have a P allele and a p allele. When we design such a square, the paternal alleles which could be present in sperm cells are placed on the left side, while the maternal alleles which can be present in the egg cells (or secondary oocytes) are placed above. The four squares indicate how alleles can combine into zygotes formed by the union of these sperm cells and egg cells to produce one of the three different genetic constitutions, or genotypes : PP, Pp or pp. Punnett’s square shows us that 25% of the offspring will have the genotype PP, 50% the genotype Pp and 25 % the genotype pp. The individuals who inherit the PP or Pp genotypes do not have phenylketonuria, as opposed to those who possess the pp genotype. While individuals with the Pp genotype do have an allele of phenylketonuria (p), the allele that codes pour the normal trait (P) is dominant. An allele that dominates or masks the presence of another allele and that is fully expressed (P in this example) is a dominant allele, and the trait that it expresses is called a dominant trait. The allele whose presence is entirely masked (p in this example) is a recessive allele and the trait that it commands is called a recessive trait.
Tradition dictates that the symbols for genes be written in italics, with the dominant alleles in upper case letters and the recessive alleles in lower case. An individual who possesses the same alleles on homologous chromosomes (PP or pp, for example) is said to be a homozygote for that trait. PP is homozygous- dominant and pp is homozygous-récessive. An individual whose homologous chromosomes possess different alleles (Pp, for example) is said t be a heterozygote for that trait.
The phenotype (phainein = to appear) is the way a genetic constitution expresses itself inside an organism; it is the physical or outward expression of a gene. An individual who possesses a Pp allele (heterozygous) has a different genotype from another who possesses a PP allele (homozygous), but both have the same phenotype — they both normally produce the phenylalanine hydroxylase. Heterozygous individuals that carry a recessive gene but which is not expressed (Pp) can transmit this gene to their offspring. These individuals are said to be carriers of the recessive gene.
