Neben seinem eigenen Magazin fotografiert Philipp seit einiger Zeit und hat sich in den letzten Jahren durch zahlreiche Selbstbau-Projekte profiliert. Mit seinem jüngsten Projekt konnte er diese Leidenschaften miteinander verbinden und eine Ausstellung umsetzen. Wir haben Philipp ein paar Fragen dazu gestellt:
Blue Tomato: Der DIY (Do It Yourself)-Ansatz begleitet dich ja jetzt schon eine ganze Weile. Nach dem Umbau einer Jagdvilla und eines Kellers hast du zuletzt in eine Foto-Ausstellung eine kleine Bowl gebaut. Woher kommt deine Begeisterung für's Selbermachen?
Philipp Schuster: Ich denke, dass ich schon als Kind dazu erzogen worden bin, Dinge zu basteln und meiner Fantasie freien Lauf zu lassen. So hatte ich immer schon das Bedürfnis aus meiner Situation und den Umständen das Beste zu machen. Drum bin ich vielleicht auch auf dem Skateboard gelandet: es gibt keine Regeln, keine Vereine. Skateboarding ist das, was du selbst daraus macht – deswegen ist es wohl auch so vielfältig.
Worum geht in deinem letzten großen Projekt, der Ausstellung "A Skateboarder's Romance"?
Ich hatte die große Ehre im Wiener Photomuseum WestLicht eine Ausstellung auf die Beine zu stellen – eine Konzeptausstellung die unterschiedliche Werkgruppen, Installationen und Exponate gezeigt und zusammen dem Besucher auf eine sehr anschauliche Art und Weise die Philosophie von DIY Skateboarding vor Augen geführt und gezeigt hat, dass es viel mehr als ein Sport ist, nämlich ein urbaner Lifestyle mit langer Tradition.
Das Herzstück der Ausstellung hat den Entstehungsprozess des DIY Kölla Bowls in Wien gezeigt: wir haben in 4 Monaten, 2.500 Arbeitsstunden und mit 30 Tonnen Baumaterial einen Kellerraum sieben Meter unter Tag in eine Bowllandschaft umfunktioniert. In der Mitte dieser Fotos stand "Die Birne", der wohl kleinste je gebaute DIY-Skatebowl, in der innerhalb der Museumsräumlichkeiten regelmäßig Sessions gefahren wurden – das war eine außergewöhnliche Sache!
Wie lange hat die Vorbereitung der Ausstellung gedauert? Musstest du das alles alleine stemmen?
Ich war drei Monate lang unter Strom – die Vorbereitungen für so etwas sind viel umfangreicher als man glaubt. Natürlich war ich dabei nicht alleine – ich hatte die unverzichtbare Hilfe von der WestLicht Belegschaft bei der Ausstellung und bei der Ausstellungspublikation hatte ich Unterstützung von der Red Bull Creative Agentur.
War die Ausstellung eine einmalige Sache oder würdest du das gerne wieder machen?
Ich kann mir gut vorstellen so etwas in Zukunft öfter zusammenzustellen. Ausstellungen sind eine Präsentationsform, die ein gänzlich anderes Erlebnis bieten, als ein Buch oder ein Video beispielsweise – da eröffnet sich eine ganz neue Dimension. Mein nächstes Projekt ist allerdings mein Globe Signature Schuh, der für die Fall 2014 Saison verfügbar sein wird. Da steckt jetzt schon ziemlich viel Arbeit drin!

Traduction - anglais Philipp Schuster is more than ‘just’ a pro skater. Alongside his very own magazine, Philipp has been a photographer for quite some time and, in the last few years, has made his mark with countless home-grown DIY projects. His newest project has allowed him to combine and exhibit all of these passions. We asked Philipp a few questions:
Blue Tomato: You’ve been pushing the DIY approach for quite a while now. After renovating a hunting lodge and a cellar, you recently built a bowl at a photo exhibition. Where does your enthusiasm for doing-it-yourself come from?
Philipp Schuster: I think I was brought up like that as a kid; making things and letting my imagination run wild. I’ve always had that need to make the best out of my situation and surroundings. That might be why I ended up on a skateboard: there are no rules, no teams. Skateboarding is what you make of it – that’s why it’s so damn versatile.
Tell us a little more about your latest project, the exhibition “A Skateboarder’s Romance”
I had the huge honour of putting on an exhibition at the Westlicht Photography Museum in Vienna – a concept exhibition showcasing different groups of works, installations and exhibits that let visitors visualise the philosophy of DIY skateboarding in a really vivid way, and which showed them that it’s much more than just a sport, rather an urban lifestyle with a long tradition.
The centrepiece of the exhibition showed the development process of the DIY Kölla bowl in Vienna: in 4 months, 2500 man hours and with 30 tonnes of building materials we turned a cellar 7 metres below ground into a skateable bowl. In the middle of all the photos was “Die Birne”, the smallest ever DIY skate bowl ever built, in which regular skate sessions went down inside the actual museum space – it was pretty extraordinary!
How long did it take to prepare the exhibit? Did you have to do it all alone?
The whole thing took me about three months – preparation for something like that is way more extensive than you would think. I wasn’t alone of course, I had the indispensable help of the Westlicht staff for the exhibition and the Red Bull Creative Agency helped me out with the publicity.
Was the exhibition a one-off thing or would you want to do another?
I can imagine putting something similar together more often in the future. Exhibitions offer a completely different experience than a book or a video can, for example. It opens up a whole new dimension! My next project though is my Globe signature shoe which will be available for Autumn 2014. There’s already loads of work to get done!
