The Tempest, as Anne Barton once pointed out, is an obliging work of art. It can be seen, among myriad other things, as anti-colonialist tract, theatrical metaphor and spiritual allegory. And Trevor Nunn, in this new production, leans very much towards the last.
It's a deeply traditional production, with none of the startling innovations of a Rupert Goold, but one that coherently and satisfyingly treats the play as a parable about the triumph of virtue over vengeance.
It occasionally runs the risk of sentimentality. The final passages of reconciliation are swathed in soothing, mock-baroque music. Giles Terera's Caliban, having been dispossessed of his island kingdom, rather tamely submits to Prospero's patronising beneficence at the conclusion. And the final handshake between Prospero and his usurping brother exceeds the bonds of fraternal love: Antonio, after all, is the man who kicked Prospero out of Milan, incites Sebastian to an act of regicide, and remains ominously silent at the play's end. All that makes his supposed climactic conversion a little too good to be true.

Jak to ujęła Anne Barton, profesor jednej z uczelni w Cambridge i autorka wielu esejów na temat prac Szekspira, „Burza” jest zobowiązującym dziełem. Może być postrzegana między innymi jako traktat przeciwko kolonializmowi, teatralna metafora czy też przenośnia o charakterze duchowym. Trevor Nunn w swojej nowej produkcji zdecydowanie skłania się ku tej ostatniej możliwości.
To bardzo tradycyjna produkcja, która nie ma w sobie nic ze zdumiewających ulepszeń wersji Ruperta Goolda, reżysera teatralnego i dyrektora Królewskiego Towarzystwa Szekspirowskiego, a jednak w sposób spójny i pełny traktuje sztukę jako parabolę o zwycięstwie dobra nad złem.
Pojawiają się jednakże momenty zakrawające o sentymentalność. Końcowym fragmentom ukazującym pojednanie, towarzyszy kojąca, pozorowana na barokową muzyka. Grany przez Gilesa Tererę Kaliban, pozbawiony uprzednio swojego wyspiarskiego królestwa, pod koniec nieco zbyt potulnie poddaje się protekcjonalnej dobroczynności Prospera. Także finalny uścisk dłoni między Prosperem a jego bratem-uzurpatorem wykracza poza granice braterskiej miłości. Antonio, który ostatecznie nie tylko wyrzucił Prospera z Milanu, ale też namówił Sebastiana do podjęcia próby zabójstwa króla, pod koniec sztuki zachowuje złowróżbne milczenie. Wszystko to sprawia, że jego rzekoma przemiana wydaje się nieco zbyt piękna, by mogła być prawdziwa
