"un local d'habitation accessoire au restaurant "XYZ" (étant un accessoire du commerce, son usage suit celui du commerce) de 24m² au 7ème étage du Grand Ilôt"

This is a section of the document discussing building uses - in this instance there is a small studio apartment which 'belongs' in some way to the restaurant (although they are not physically connected as on different floors). I'm struggling to know how to translate 'accessoire' (adjective) and 'un accessoire du commerce' (noun) in this context.

So far I've considered 'ancillary', 'attached to' and 'accessory to'. Is there some more appropriate word or phrase?

I would use 'attached to' both times, and change the second occurrence so it doesn't need to be a noun.

You might also consider 'inseparable from', though perhaps that is rather over-interpreting for use in a legal doc.?

I think it's important to retain the notion that this dwelling is inextricably linked to the business, in an active sort of way, rather than implying that it is somehow just a passive add-on; 'accessoire' can have this meaning in FR which is less common in EN.

agree  Tony M: I agree in principle, though I am a little concerned that the s/t doesn't use 'dépendance' in that case; I think 'accessoire' has a different legal implication, and it might be dangerous to change the terms. / Yes — but it must be the right one ;-)

neutral  B D Finch: No reason at all to think it is an annexe. Accommodation attached to a business is often in the form of e.g. a flat over a shop.
