béssanier

français vers anglais Autre Général / conversation / salutations / correspondance
The word in a story about how La Médocaine mountain biking 'race' came to exist.

Discussion

Sheila Wilson Nov 8, 2009:
the different Bessans I think it may be simply that there is more than one Bessan vineyard, and this is how the French refer to these vineyards. Of course, the local inhabitants will have some sort of name - maybe they are bessaniers/bessanières
Walid Abdellaoui (X) Nov 8, 2009:
Was looking it up, I think Sheila's right. I'd say les bessaniers is the name of the vineyard surrounding a small town of this region called Bessan.
Sheila Wilson Nov 8, 2009:
A reference to vineyards Bessan appears in several Médoc wine names: Château Bessan Segur: Château La Tour de Bessan; Moulin de Bessan; ...

This one suggests they are something like "hedgerows" :

Les chênes–jumeaux, dits « chênes Besson » sont ces ARBRES SAUVAGES DES BESSANIERS SOUS LESQUELS LE VIGNERON AIME SE REPOSER à l’issue d’une belle journée.

Whatever they are, it may need a "geo-cultural" adaptation rather than a descriptive translation. "Hedgerows" quite possibly captures the spirit of the term from an Anglo-Norman viewpoint.

I suspect the placenames in Bessan have little to do with it, being simply what in other places would be Côte, coteaux, etc.

Don't know that there actually are a lot of hedgerows in the area, but some of the region's wines are described as having "hedgerow fruits" tastes and aromas!

...or something along those lines, from what I can tell (see link). Appears to be a 'bordeluche' expression.

These ploughed strips are at the ends of the fields, or presumably at the ends of the vineyards. You might be able to say "vineyards with their oxen-ploughed divisions/passages/roadways". They probably function as rights of way, as Martyn suggested. Just guessing...
