Texte source - allemand Böden sind der belebte Teil der obersten Erdkruste. Sie besitzen eine Mächtigkeit von wenigen Zentimetern bis zu mehreren Zehner Metern bei einer Dicke der Erdkruste von meist 5…40 km. Die Erdkruste ist wiederum Teil der im Mittel ca. 100 km dicken Lithosphäre, die sich aus den tektonischen Platten mit den Kontinenten zusammensetzt. Die gesamte Strecke von der Erdoberfläche bis zum Erdmittelpunkt beträgt 6.370 km. Bei diesen Größenverhältnissen wird deutlich, dass Böden die dünne und verletzliche Haut der Erde bilden, die besonderer Aufmerksamkeit bedarf.
Die Bodenkunde (Bodenwissenschaft) oder Pedologie ist die Wissenschaft von den Eigenschaften und Funktionen sowie der Entwicklung und Verbreitung von Böden. Sie befasst sich mit den Möglichkeiten der Nutzung von Böden und mit den Gefahren, die mit ihrer Fehlnutzung durch den Menschen zusammenhängen sowie mit der Vermeidung und der Behebung von Bodenbelastungen.
Böden als Naturkörper in Ökosystemen
Böden sind auf dem Festland (terrestrisch), im Übergangsbereich zwischen Wasser und Land (semiterrestrisch) und unter Wasser (subhydrisch) entstanden. Die terrestrischen und semiterrestrischen Böden sind nach unten durch fes¬tes oder lockeres Gestein, nach oben (meist) durch eine Vegetationsdecke und den Übergang zur Atmosphäre begrenzt, während sie zur Seite gleitend in benachbarte Böden übergehen. Sie bestehen aus Mine¬ralen unterschiedlicher Art und Größe sowie aus organischer Substanz, dem Humus. Minerale und Humus sind in bestimmter Weise im Raum angeordnet und bilden miteinander das Bodengefüge mit einem charakteristischen Hohl¬raumsystem. Dieses besteht aus Poren unterschiedlicher Größe und Form, die mit der Bodenlösung, d.h. mit Wasser und gelösten Stoffen, und der Bodenluft gefüllt sind. Zwischen der festen, flüssigen und gasförmigen Phase bestehen dabei zahlreiche chemische und physikalische Wechselwirkungen.
Böden sind grundsätzlich belebt. Ihre Hohlräume enthalten eine Vielzahl von Bodenorganismen; darunter können mehr als 10 Millionen z. T. noch unbekannter Mikroorganismen pro Gramm fruchtbaren Bodens sein und diesen zusammen mit anderen Organismen in einen hoch aktiven Reaktor verwandeln. Parallel dazu lockern, mischen und aggregieren vor allem die größeren Bodentiere ihren Lebensraum.
Böden sind Naturkörper unterschiedlichen Alters, die je nach Art des Ausgangsgesteins und Reliefs unter einem bestimmten Klima und damit einer bestimmten streuliefernden Vegetation mit charakteristischen Lebensgemeinschaften (Biozönosen) durch bodenbildende Prozesse entstan-den sind. Damit ist die Entstehung der Böden an die Entwicklung des Lebens auf der Erde gebunden, worauf bereits der Bodenkundler W. L. Kubiena 1948 hingewiesen hat. Im Präkambrium, als sich erste Bakterien und Algen im Meer entwickelten, entstanden zunächst nur subhydrische Böden. Mit der Entwicklung erster Landpflanzen vor 430 Millionen Jahren im Silur wurden dann auch semiterrestrische und schließlich terrestrische Böden gebildet. Der russische Bodenkundler W. W. Dokučaev erkannte Ende des 19. Jh. Böden als eigenständige Naturkörper. Der Schweizer Bodenkundler H. Jenny (1941) definierte Böden (B) dann als Funktion ihrer genetischen Faktoren: Ausgangsgestein (G), Klima (K), Organismen (O), Relief (R) und Zeit (Z). In den letzten 5 000 Jahren der Erdgeschichte wurden Böden außerdem in bis heute zunehmendem Maße vom Menschen (M) durch unterschiedliche Formen der Bodennutzung geprägt:

Die genetischen Faktoren lösen in ihrem komplexen Zusammenspiel bodenbildende Prozesse aus, die unterteilt werden in Umwandlungs- und Umlagerungsprozesse (Transformation und Translokation). Zu ersteren gehören vor allem Gesteinsverwitterung und Mineralumwandlung, Verlehmung und Verbraunung, sowie Zersetzung organischer Substanz und Humifizierung. Umlagerungsprozesse werden durch perkolierendes und aszendierendes Bodenwasser ausgelöst, z. B. Entsalzung und Versalzung, Entkalkung und Carbonatisierung, Tonverlagerung oder Podsolierung. Die Umwandlungs- und Umlagerungsprozesse führen in Abhängigkeit von ihrer Intensität und Dauer zu charakteristischen Bodeneigenschaften wie z. B. den für die verschiedenen Böden typischen Bodenhorizonten, die oben streuähnlich sind, nach unten gesteinsähnlicher werden. Damit ergibt sich insgesamt die folgende Kausalkette der Pedogenese:
Genetische Faktoren → bodenbildende Prozesse → Bodenmerkmale
In umgekehrter Reihenfolge gelesen, erlauben die heutigen Merkmale der Böden Rückschlüsse auf die abgelaufenen Prozesse sowie die sie bestim-menden genetischen Faktoren und tragen damit zu einer Rekonstruktion der Landschaftsgeschichte bei. Mit Hilfe der Kausalkette der Pedo-genese sind auch Prognosen zur zukünftigen Boden- und Landschaftsentwicklung möglich. So können bei Veränderung eines genetischen Faktors, wie z. B. des Klimas als Folge einer globalen Erwärmung, Prognosen zu den sich in verschiedenen Regionen der Erde ändernden pedogenen Prozessen und damit auch zu den zukünftigen Eigenschaften der Böden und deren sich ändernden Nutzungsmöglichkeiten gemacht werden.
Die Gesamtheit der Böden bildet die Bodendecke oder Pedosphäre (pedon, griech. Boden), die sich im Über¬schneidungsbereich von Atmosphäre, Lithosphäre und Hydrosphäre gemeinsam mit der Biosphäre entwickelt hat. Die Ökosphäre umfasst die Gesamtheit aller Ökosysteme und schließt damit auch die Pedosphäre ein. In einer Landschaft als einem charakteristischen Ausschnitt der Ökosphäre sind ähnliche und verschiedene Böden miteinander vergesellschaftet. Die Böden einer Landschaft sind dabei miteinander durch Energie-, Wasser- und Stoffflüsse verknüpft. So werden den Senkenböden einer Landschaft mit dem Oberflächenabfluss und dem Sickerwasser gelöste Verwitterungsprodukte zugeführt, die den Böden der benachbarten Kuppen entstammen; häufig werden Hangböden auch durch den Oberflächenabfluss erodiert und benachbarte Senkenböden mit deren Erosionsmassen überdeckt. Die im Sickerwasser gelösten und bis in größere Bodentiefe verlagerten Stoffe gelangen in das Grundwasser und werden mit dem Tiefenabfluss in die Senken transportiert. Durch Oberflächen-, Zwischen- und Tiefenabfluss findet damit ein Stofftransport von den Kuppen in die Senken und schließlich in die eine Landschaft entwässernden Oberflächengewässer statt. Damit beeinflussen Böden in Abhängigkeit von ihrem Stoffbestand – einschließlich anthropogener oder natürlicher Schadstoffbelastungen – die Zusammensetzung und Qualität des Grundwassers und Abflusswassers. Letzteres beeinflusst wiederum die Lebensgemeinschaften der Oberflächengewässer in den verschiedenen Landschaften. Damit bestehen enge stoffliche Verknüpfungen sowohl zwischen den Böden einer Catena (lat. Kette) von der Kuppe bis zur Senke als auch zwischen den Böden einer Landschaft und deren Grund- und Oberflächengewässern.
Böden sind (meistens) von Pflanzen bewachsen und durchwurzelt sowie von Tieren und Mikroorganismen besiedelt; sie sind da-mit Teil eines Ökosystems. Zusammen mit der bodennahen Luftschicht bilden sie den Lebensraum (= Biotop) der Lebensgemeinschaft aus Pflanzen, Tieren und Mikroorganismen (= Biozönose). Zwischen Biotop und Biozönose bestehen dementsprechend enge Wechselbeziehungen wie auch zwischen den oberirdischen und unterirdischen Lebensgemeinschaften.
Der Boden bietet den Pflanzen als Wurzelraum Verankerung und versorgt sie mit Wasser, Sauerstoff und Nährstoffen. Letzteres gilt auch für Bodentiere und Mikroorganismen. Die Versorgung wird dabei vor allem durch den jeweiligen Vorrat und die Verfügbarkeit von Wasser, Sauerstoff und Nährstoffen im Wurzelraum bestimmt.

Soils are the biologically active part of the outermost layer of the Earth’s crust, ranging in thickness from a few centimeters to several decameters. The Earth's crust, in turn, generally has a thickness of 5…40 km and is part of the lithosphere, which has an average thickness of approx. 100 km and consists of the tectonic plates with the continents. The total distance between the ground surface to the Earth's center is of 6,370 km. These orders of magnitude illustrate how soils form a thin and fragile skin on the Earth’s surface, requiring special care.
Soil science is the science of the properties and functions, as well as the development and distribution of soils. It deals with the possibilities for soil use and the risks associated with misuse by humans, as well as the prevention and remediation of soil contamination and damage.
Soils as Natural Bodies in Ecosystems
Soils evolve on land (terrestrial soils), in transition zones between water and land (semiterrestrial soils), and under water (subhydric soils). Terrestrial and semi-terrestrial soils are delimited at the bottom by solid or unconsolidated rocks, and at the top by vegetation cover and the interface with the atmosphere, with gradual transitions to neighboring soils. They consist of minerals of various types and sizes, and of organic substances, the humus. Minerals and humus are spatially arranged in a specific way, forming together the soil structure with a characteristic void system. The void system consists of pores of various shapes and sizes, which are filled with soil solution, i.e. with water and dissolved substances, and soil air. Here, numerous chemical and physical interactions take place between the solid, liquid and gaseous phases.
Soils are always biologically active. Their voids contain a multitude of soil organisms that may include more than 10 million microorganisms per gram of fertile soil, some of which have yet to be discovered, and together with other organisms, transform the soil into a highly active biogeochemical reactor. Parallel to this, the larger soil fauna loosens, mixes and aggregates the soil and thereby shapes its habitat.
Soils are natural bodies of various ages that evolve through soil-forming processes, depending on the type of parent rock and relief under a specific climate, and thus specific vegetation and litter with characteristic biotic communities (biocoenoses). Therefore, the evolution of soils is connected with the development of life on Earth. This was already stated by the soil scientist W. L. Kubiena in 1948. In the Precambrian, as the first bacteria and algae developed in the ocean, there were only subhydric soils. With the development of the first terrestrial plants 430 million years ago in the Silurian, semiterrestrial and finally also terrestrial soils were formed. At the end of the 19th century, the Russian soil scientist W. W. Dokučaev recognized soils as independent natural bodies. Following Dokučaev, the Swiss soil scientist H. Jenny (1941) then defined soils (S) as a function of their genetic factors: parent material (P), climate (C), organisms (O), relief (R) and age (T). Furthermore, in the last 5 000 years of the Earth’s history, soils have increasingly been affected until today by humans (H) through various forms of land use:

With their complex interactions, the genetic factors trigger soil-forming processes, which are divided into transformation and translocation processes. The former include mainly rock weathering and mineral transformation, loamification and brunification, as well as the decomposition of organic matter and humification. Translocation processes are triggered by percolating and ascending soil water, e.g. leaching and salinization, decalcification and carbonation, clay migration (lessivage) or podzolization. Depending on their intensity and duration, transformation and translocation processes lead to characteristic soil properties, e.g. the soil horizons typical for the various soils, which are litter-like at the top and become more rock-like with depth. Altogether, this results in the following causal chain of pedogenesis:
Genetic factors → soil-forming processes → soil characteristics
Read in the inverse sequence, the characteristics of soils today allow conclusions to be drawn on processes that took place in the past, as well as the genetic factors they depended on, and thus contribute to a reconstruction of the landscape history. Using the causal chain of pedogenesis, predictions can also be made on future soil and landscape development. Thus, when one of the genetic factors changes, e.g. the climate as a result of global warming, predictions can be made on the changing pedogenic processes in various regions of the Earth, and therefore also on the future soil properties and their changing options for land use.
All soils collectively form the soil cover or pedosphere (pedon, Greek: soil), which evolved together with the biosphere in the overlapping zone of the atmosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere. The ecosphere comprises the entirety of all ecosystems, and thus also includes the pedosphere. Similar and different soils are closely associated in landscapes, which are characteristic sections of the ecosphere. The soils of a landscape are connected with each other through flows of energy, water and material. Thus, soils in depressions are enriched with weathering products dissolved by surface flow and seepage water from soils on the neighboring hills. Soils on slopes are often eroded by surface flow, and the neighboring soils in depressions are covered by their erosion material. Substances that are dissolved in the seepage water and translocated to greater depths reach the groundwater, and are transported with the base flow into the depressions. Through surface flow, interflow and base flow, substances are transported from the hills to the depressions, and finally to the surface waters (streams, lakes and rivers) draining the landscape. Thus, depending on the constituent substances and including anthropogenic or natural contaminations, soils influence the composition and quality of the groundwater and runoff water. The latter, in turn, influences the biocenosis in the surface waters of the various landscapes. Therefore, there is a close substance connection both between the soils of a catena (Lat. chain) from the summit to the depression, and also between the soils of a landscape and their groundwater and surface waters.
Soils are (usually) covered with vegetation and penetrated by roots, and are populated with animals and microorganisms; they are always part of an ecosystem. Together with the surface-near layer of air, they form the habitat (= biotope) of a community consisting of plants, animals and microorganisms (= biocenosis). Accordingly, there are close interactions between the biotope and the biocenosis, and also between the surface and subsurface life communities.
The soil’s root zone offers the plants anchoring and provides water, oxygen and nutrients. The latter also applies to soil animals and microorganisms. The supply is mainly determined by the respective reserves and the availability of water, oxygen and nutrients in the root zone.

I am technical translator specializing in all aspects of agriculture, from the soil through crops and pests to agricultural machinery and technology. Most of my regular work consists of operating manuals for tractors and implements, as well as for modern technology such as software for terminals and ISOBUS devices. I also have extensive experience with pesticide trial reports and registration dossiers. My greatest achievement to date was the translation of two textbooks for the Springer Science Verlag: “Hydrogeologie” by Hölting/Coldewey (2012-2013) and “Lehrbuch der Bodenkunde” by Scheffer/Schachtschabel (2013-2014), both of which will probably be published this year. For the translation of “Lehrbuch der Bodenkunde”, I worked closely with all 8 authors of the book to refine the terminology used throughout the book, so that I probably have one of the best DE=>EN glossaries for soil science!
Other fields I am also comfortable with are chemistry, biology, botany and the environment.

A little personal history…
Born in BC, Canada, my family moved to Quebec when I was 5, so I grew up in a French environment and therefore have two native tongues, English and French. My elementary and secondary education was in French, but I completed my higher education in English, so I am most comfortable translating into English in my fields of specialization.
I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in soil and water conservation and my Master’s degree in soil physics at McGill University in Montreal. After completing my degrees, I travelled in Costa Rica for a few months where I met my German husband, and one year later I moved to Germany, this was in 1998. I then worked for several years for an engineering firm in the field of flood protection, during which time I had my first translating experiences when English documents were required.
