For an international legal institution(2021-present) I translate Burmese documents,
including official documents, interview transcripts, social media posts,
handwritten notebooks and meeting records. The work is confidential and needs
to be done meticulously so that its value as forensic evidence is not
compromised.
For an international human rights organisation (1995-present)
I have translated Chinese texts relating to the death penalty, and Burmese
documents relevant to research on human rights in Myanmar with a focus since
2017 on the Rohingya situation, including military orders, and transcribed
eye-witness accounts. The work feeds directly into reports, and so requires me
to translate to deadlines to adhere to editorial style.
I also translate official documents, fiction, and other
materials for a range of private clients.
Since 1995 I have been a part-time translator, working
principally from Burmese and Chinese to English. I can also undertake
translation from Thai, Khmer, Swedish and Japanese.
From 1999-2022 I was Professor of Burmese, specialising in
languages of Myanmar and Southeast Asia at the University of London.
