No obstante, los afectados han verificado que la halitosis tiene efectos profundos en la autoestima y autoconfianza, siendo un desencadenante de ansiedad y de estrés continuados (3). En los últimos años, los relatos esporádicos de estos pacientes han dado lugar a estudios a nivel mundial. Uno de ellos, realizado en Hungría en 2006, obtuvo resultados alarmantes: la halitosis suponía el trastorno bucal con el impacto más negativo en la calidad de vida de una persona. Se demostró que este efecto supera al causado por otros problemas de salud oral, como podrían ser la ausencia de dientes, la utilización de prótesis removibles (dentaduras), la existencia de dolor según la articulación temporomandibular o la persistente sensación de ardor bucal, entre otros (13).
