Give me time to think about proposals, and compose a pondered and [I hope] appropriate response. Also avoids me opening my mouth and putting my foot in it...

but, as always, "but". Initially, I prefer E-mail, but if things have to go quickly, I also prefer Skype for "quick queries" and phone for urgent stuff as I am not always glued to my computer.

... but, if/when I have to wait (too) long for confirmation of one job, and another (firm) offer comes up, I open a Skype chat window with each of the clients involved (NOT a multiple conversation) in order to settle things more quickly...

But it would be lovely to occasionally meet some of my clients - I always wonder what they look like!

I've met a few clients in person with whom I normally keep contact per mail or telephon. None of them was as good-looking as I'd imagined. Maybe that's my problem, cause I tend to give them the look of a film star or a celebrity...

I fully agree!

Skype and phone are also a more efficient way to clarify any "problems".

E-mails and skype Apr 29, 2011

Me too I prefer e-mails for having the time to look at the job carefully but for simpler questions related to the job and for asking about availability skype is quick and easy and I found some clients too with it!

Most definitely not Skype or SMS Apr 29, 2011

Dear client:

If you are in a hurry - pick up the phone and speak to me. I will be there. We even provide a toll-free number for that. Or send an email, which will reach me within seconds.

In case I am not picking up the phone or if I don't answer any email at the drop of a hat
- I am simply not available.
Perhaps I am talking on another phone line. Perhaps I am visiting the bathroom. Perhaps I am dealing with the UPS guy or I am getting the mail. Perhaps I

- I am simply not available.
Perhaps I am talking on another phone line. Perhaps I am visiting the bathroom. Perhaps I am dealing with the UPS guy or I am getting the mail. Perhaps I am on my lunch break. Perhaps I am taking a nap because you happen to come up with requests and ideas that might change the world but unfortunately at 3 o'clock at night. Or perhaps, and most important of all: I am in the middle of work.

Therefore, dear client, you may try really hard to disrupt any of my activities some fractions of a second faster than it takes to dial my number. It won't work. I will not allow unnecessary gateways for viruses, spyware or malware on our machines in our network.

If you cannot afford a simple phone call, if you lack proper management to organize your own job and you must turn everything into a rush, or if you prefer to speak to me in rudimentary SMS txtese, maybe we weren't cut out for each other in the first place.

definitely by mail Apr 29, 2011

Hi everyone !
As I took a blackberry to be more free (and more enslaved, depend on days), a mail reaches me in second.
I also like Skype but use it more to discuss projects, when working in team also, it's fantastic.
Generally I'm not great at phone and feel more at ease by the others two means but in emergency a phone call will always be the easiest way to overcome any difficulty.

Somewhere between neilmac and Nicole Schnell... Apr 29, 2011

Together, they say it all.

I pick up my phone when I am available, but my answer is very frequently:
"Let me see the document, and I'll mail you back."

So you might as well just mail me in the first place.

E-mail, for several reasons May 1, 2011

*Number One*
I am often asleep when my clients call from Europe, and even sometimes when they are on the East Coast. Once I get the opportunity to have some sleep, I do not wish to be disturbed.

Number Two
They can attach the document - saves everyone's time.

Number Three
It's easier and faster.

Number Four
Skype is out of the question: trust me, they do not want to see me when I'm focusing on my work, nor do I want to be bothered.... See more

Number Five
Thanks, Neil, for the great insight:
