Change log

Oct 25, 2016 23:21: writeaway changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Rasha A., Tony M, writeaway

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

@Greatheera Please could you provide an extract of the French text you are translating?
The extract should include the terms in question.
Without that context, we can only repeat the exercise you have done and give a very basic term for term reply which may not be appropriate.
If there are railway experts here, they too will no doubt need to have some context.
I hope you find the help you need.

These are 3 "nouns" of trains
What I have foun in my researches:
motrice=motor coach
locomotive=locomotive
automotrice=multiple units
I am not sure of the results and I need help from experts.
Thank you
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Oct 26, 2016:
@Greatheera I note your Wikipedia reference.
For the purposes of the translation of the text you are working on, do you require the translation of the term "motrice" :
- as an adjective, or
- as a noun?

Of the 22 times the term appears in the reference you have provided, it is not possible to know which of those 22 times the term appears is the one or ones you are having difficulty translating. Bear in mind that without being able to see the original French text, we can only rely upon extracts that you might provide. The Wikipedia text, without guidance as to which parts are relevant, does not really help that much.

You indicate that you are looking to translate the 3 terms - motrice, locomotive and automotrice - as types of train, so I suppose you are looking for nouns.

Please could you indicate :
- the searches you have carried out
- the conclusions you have drawn thus far from those searches
- why the results of your own searches are not helpful, or the doubts you have
This help us to avoid repeating work you have already done. It also helps us to understand how you are thinking. Finally, it also helps to guide in thinking and searching.

Tony M Oct 25, 2016:
@ Asker Rasha has given you the answer you appear to need in the Termium reference below, which you ought to have been able to find for yourself by basic research. is there anything special here which makes you think this might not apply?
Tony M Oct 25, 2016:
@ Asker OK, so which word do you want, 'automotrice' or 'motrice'? If it's the latter, please explain how it is being used in your text, as it does not appear in the text you have given us.
Ichrak Ben Ali (asker) Oct 25, 2016:
These are types of trains I must find the accurate translation of each word
Ichrak Ben Ali (asker) Oct 25, 2016:
It is a brief description of types of trains such as TGV
philgoddard Oct 25, 2016:
Do you want the translation of motrice or automotrice? And could we have some context, please?
