A couple of days ago, I was streaming a political talk show over my computer, and the host announced, in a very quick and passing fashion, that the federal government here in the US is formulating plans to prosecute the mayors of sanctuary cities over here, as well as the Governor of California (who one politically conservative commentator calls "Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown), who has declared his entire state a sanctuary. The government maintains that harboring undocumented immigrants anywhere in the US runs counter to federal laws.

Thanks, Phil. Sometimes I hesitate using the term because I think it's acquiring a slightly pejorative sense in US English surrounding issues of identity erasure.

That people of different ancestries marry and/or procreate, so that individuals, such as those in the US, are mostly of varied ancestry. For example, I myself am the product of the American melting pot. My DNA has been analyzed: about 50% Anglo/Scandinavian, 14 % German, etc. I am a PRODUCT of the American melting pot. It is not a "ville" where people seem to stick mostly to their own kind.

Melting pot would be the perfect translation in my opinion. It doesn't mean everyone is assimilated, simply that there are lots of different nationalities. You should put it as an answer, Sheri.

Places like the American Chinatowns have mostly remained distinct enclaves where people seem to have maintained the customs and lifestyle of their country of origin, just like I saw went I went through NYC's Chinatown. So I'm not all that sure that one can say that they have totally assimilated, so there would not seem to be much "melting" with citizens whose ancestry comes from elsewhere.
