: you're adding a non existing element: just because it's not protruding, "une poignée non-débordante" is not necessarily "flush" with anything. That would be a separate / distincte characteristic.

: if it does not stick out, it is flush. if it does not sitck out and is not flush, it would be "recessed" but the French does not say "en retrait" or similar.

Yes. And for all we know, with the close-to-zero context we have, the expression could be part of a formal standard, which will set out minimum requirements without imposing any particular way in which they are to be implemented.

I understand that it can be difficult if something like this is just in a list of disparate objects. But OTOH sometimes it can be surprising how many clues can be obtained from the context in which a term like this is found.
