David BUICK (asker) Mar 1, 2010:
typo or not Catharine, I suppose it's possible, but I was wondering whether it wasn't more along the lines of something to help radiate the heat, based on the GdT entry for "pétale du diagramme de rayonnement". Which is pretty much a wild guess.
@ Constantinos I'm not denying that 'pétale' is literally 'petal', but the literal translation you gave does not suit the spare-part context of the question
typo ? Could this be a typo for pédale ? Do you know what country the machine is from ? In some languages that use other alphabets 'd' and 't' are interchangeable when romanised.
Constantinos Faridis (X) Mar 1, 2010:
i insist! un petale is a petal! from the greek word πέταλον if you know that...

NOTE CONFIDENCE!!!

Given that they are replaced as a pair and the resistance is the heater, what else can it be? There aren't that many parts in a kebab machine. A motor, a spindle, a heater and a reflector is about it.

agree Bourth (X) : Would make sense, esp. if fold-out side reflectors. Still, "petal", in quotes, is a safe option since we really don't know yet!

disagree Catharine Cellier-Smart : the term being looked for is part of the machine, not what it makes

agree margaret caulfield : Sorry! I've just looked up "resistance and petal" and you're right after all! But I think you should have given a mechanical explanation and not a gastronomical one!!

neutral Bourth (X) : "Resistance and petal" hits seem to refer to diseases afflicting roses! Still think "petal" (in quotes) is a safe bet though, failing more info.
