français term

mettre la focale sur

Non-PRO français vers anglais Autre Général / conversation / salutations / correspondance interview
Hello,

"Céline Schoen est allée à leur rencontre avec l’objectif assumé de mettre la focale sur eux – et non sur leurs enfants. Sans jugement ni complaisance, mais avec l’idée que leurs témoignages pourront aider la société à appréhender ce nouveau phénomène de radicalisation."

Céline Schoen interviews parents whose children have gone to Syria.

I first just thought it was "blame" but it seems that it just means "focus on" since in the following sentence it says "sans jugement ni complaisance"...

She met these parents with the obvious goal of focusing on the parents...

probably a stupid question, but I've never seen this form used before.

Thank you!

@Nikki I have just seen the rest of your comment, yes , to me, it didn't seem to be the usual "assumer" here, and I didn't really give it much thought, thanks a million!
Louisa Tchaicha (asker) Dec 26, 2016:
@Nikki :)))
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Dec 26, 2016:
@Louisa It is a good job you asked the question. This is a complex subject and "to blame" would have been a serious mistake. ;-)

"Objectif assumé" does not really mean "obvious". Like the expression "assumer son choix", it means something she assumes, something she takes responsibility for. Such was her intention.

So, CS went to meet these parents with the intention of focussing on the, rather than on their children.

agree Tony M : FR lacks a single word for 'to focus', so different ways are used to say it.

merci!
agree B D Finch : Though FR doesn't "lack a single word for 'to focus'", the single word being "focaliser".

merci! BDF. Remarque : focaliser est parfois utilisé lorsque cette attention est concentrée sur un sujet en particulier au détriment d'un autre.
agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Laurette, interesting comment about 'focaliser'.
