les matières sales

français vers anglais Sciences Agriculture horticulture
1° passage d’un scarificateur afin d’ôter toutes les matières sales et le feutre.

Anyone got any good suggestions for sales in this context? As with previous two questions the text is about turf preparation.

Discussion

Alison Sabedoria (X) Jun 23, 2010:
No problem, Dan! I was just curious, and not in the least offended. Flicking back and forth between things, I'd lost track of the fact that Liz hadn't actually posted it as an answer. Hope the turf is settling now! =)
Libero_Lang_Lab (asker) Jun 23, 2010:
et voila.. question reopened :-)
Libero_Lang_Lab (asker) Jun 23, 2010:
For whatever reason... Liz opted not to post an answer, just a reference. Had she posted an answer I would have chosen it. Clearly dead matter works well, so I didn't particularly want to prolong the debate, but sorry if it's caused offence!
Alison Sabedoria (X) Jun 23, 2010:
Closed in under an hour?! Less than an hour to decide there's "no acceptable answer", and yet you thank Liz (quite rightly) for an answer that you think "works nicely" - I don't get it.
Libero_Lang_Lab (asker) Jun 23, 2010:
Liz yes, I think dead matter works nicely. thanks
Libero_Lang_Lab (asker) Jun 23, 2010:
dirty materials sounds like porn mags...

debris

This covers all undesirable loose stuff from grass cuttings left after mowing (which can cause the "thatch"), through leaves and twigs to litter, etc.

agree rkillings : Although what you describe is better called 'detritus' (organic) than 'debris' (inorganic).

Thanks, rkillings! The Shorter OED gives "debris of any kind" for detritus. In any case, "matières sales" is not that specific.

B. EMPLACEMENT

B. LOCATION
Animal facilities should be located so as to minimize public access or through-traffic, as well as the movement of animals, cages, waste, etc., through public corridors and elevators. The facilities should be readily accessible by animal users yet easily secured. Direct access to the outside for deliveries and disposal is desirable. Facilities located on higher floors should be accessed by a minimum of two elevators, one for clean and one for dirty materials, unless appropriate measures are taken to clean and sanitize a single elevator following the transport of dirty materials.

Overview

Many lawns are plagued with crabgrass and fortunately, it can be controlled with herbicides, especially when the crabgrass is still in its early growing stages in the spring or early summer. However, after you have successfully killed the crabgrass, your lawn still might not thrive because the dead organic material can accumulate on top of the soil, under the grass blades. Use a power rake--also known as a dethatcher--to cut vertically into the lawn to bring the dead crabgrass and other dead organic materials, called thatch, up to the top of the grass where you can more easily remove it.

I assume you are still on the subject of grass/lawns?
