I worked for 20 years in-house within a team of 25 translators and we met often with colleagues from other EU institutions (EP, Council, EC, CJEU) in seminars, workshops, talks and conferences...

Like Teresa, I worked in-house with other colleagues for over 20 years. I was also active in the American Translators Association. Some of my best friends are translators!

We have the Japan Association of Translators (JAT) and The Society of Writers, Editors, and Translators (SWET) here in Japan, primarily for J-E translators. Both of these have SIGs or special interest groups, as well, and host various national and regional courses and networking events afterwards.
Not only do we have the chance to meet face to face instead of online and swap info and other juicy tidbits, but I've made some really nice friends there. Kanpai, hic!  ... Yes, translators association enables me to know other translators in real life. Powwow too, though I also attended one Powwow so far.

For instance at the annual Danish powwow - Hi Yetta!
-- The last couple of years we have had a Christmas get-together with a dozen of us in Aarhus. (A similar group met in Copenhagen).
-- I meet colleagues at training days organised by professional associations or gatherings arranged by clients.
-- I have helped a couple with Trados...
And occasionally we have met up in private life, just to chat and put faces to the voices on the phone.

I submitted this question because although I live in a city, it's in quite a rural area of the UK (on the border between Devon and Cornwall). I've managed to meet up with a few translators in my city and county but a lot of them have said that it took them a while to find fellow translators in our area, because we all live quite far apart! I wondered if other translators who don't live in or near big cities had experienced this, too.

Despite the hundreds of translators I "know" virtually and keep contact regularly with, I actually know a few personally, and I intent to meet more of them as soon as I can. It's a very interesting group of people, no doubt.

But apart from the ones closest to me geographically, I rarely get to meet others, as I always seem to be busy whenever pow-wows and similar events are held.

At one time I was the Queen of Pow wows. Family obligations have put the brakes on this in the past decade or so but I still attend other people's, and of course conferences. Admittedly I need to travel to urban centres for these. I do have close friendships that have grown from these networking events.
