housework May 1, 2010

That should have been one of the options.

Housework: ironing, cleaning the toilet, anything that requires little mental effort.

Well yes, now that you mention it, and gardening. May 1, 2010

Actually, housework for me is a break from work. Or is it the other way around?

Playing Pinball May 1, 2010

One of my oldest dreams came true at the end of last year: We got us our own Addams Family Pinball machine. It's amazing how fast I am able to let go of my entangled thoughts when concentrating on nothing but the metal ball. After 30 minutes of pinballing my brain feels as if a fresh summer breeze had blown through it and I am ready to tackle the project again.

Dilbert in Internet or watching Southpark (anything that requires little mental effort but is funny!)

If stress means not being in complete control of your business... May 1, 2010

I guess that working until you are in control of it is the best cure for stress.

cooking while listening to upbeat music and reading crime fiction May 1, 2010

I find that taking time to cook at the end of a long working day is very therapeutic. It lets me reflect on the work if I want to. If I play some upbeat music, I play it loud, sing along and usually shuffle my feet while chopping the veg. The odd wee whirl around the kitchen is another favourite

Reading crime books helps me get to another place mentally, too.

I do like cooking... May 1, 2010

... baking a cake or some cookies is perfect. Otherwise, everything else that requires no mental effort, like having a good cup of coffee and flicking through a glossy magazine!

exercise is number one May 1, 2010

I always make sure I get exercise. If i can, I get out to the gym, and during the season, I get out for a late-day bike ride. If I can't do that, I do housecleaning and I also like cooking...another thing I like is to just watch one of my favourite tv shows: true crime shows, or sports.

Mostly music... May 1, 2010

I can even translate and listen to music, as long as the music isn't too distracting.

Other things I do to have a relaxing break:

Cook with my iPod shuffle on.

Play solitaire on my cell phone.

Play a game of Scrabble.

Do a few simple exercises.

Lie down and close my eyes.

Check Facebook.

Not many answering "hobbies" May 1, 2010

Isn't that what hobbies are for - to unwind and de-stress?

For me, gardening can sometimes be a chore, when it demands my immediate attention and won't let me leave it until I want to do it. But it's also great for unwinding.

What better outlet for frustrations than digging the vegetable patch, throwing all the weeds (and the odd snail, I have to admit) onto a bonfire? With the dry weather and the local clay, once you have turned over the soil you have to whack hell out

What better outlet for frustrations than digging the vegetable patch, throwing all the weeds (and the odd snail, I have to admit) onto a bonfire? With the dry weather and the local clay, once you have turned over the soil you have to whack hell out of it to get it to crumble - excellent therapy!

After a few hours of that, all I can manage, physically, is to sit at the computer, translating!

Then, a few months later, I can join Rebekka in the kitchen, using my very own home-grown ingredients - always supposing I've done all the right things at exactly the right time so that there's something to cook!
