English term or phrase: drug-naïve
Phenotypic testing may not predict clinical outcome well if there is a mixed population of quasi-species, for instance in a chronically-infected *DRUG-NAÏVE* person with transmitted drug resistance, or a treated person who has not taken ARVs for months. Given that the results may be less informative in these cases, that the cost of phenotypic testing is at least three times greater than genotyping testing, and that phenotyping is available only from a limited number of major laboratories which use different methods, phenotypic testing is not recommended by WHO/CDC for routine population-based HIVDR monitoring purposes. Special supplementary phenotype studies are appropriate to address crucial research questions.

My research defines "drug-naïve" as someone who is free of drugs.
