Spanish term or phrase: ilustración historiada
This is from a text describing a work by Argentine painter Romulo Maccio:

La tapa de la revista Das Kunstwerk de enero de 1966 fue ilustrada con Muestra tu rostro (1964-1965), obra en la cual la cara se asemeja a una máscara de cierta complejidad. Podría tratarse de un personaje de ciencia ficción o de ilustración historiada, donde el detalle de los ojos aparece como enigmático.

I am wondering if "illustración historiada" might mean coming book here...

comic book
Explanation:
It means comic book, it's making a direct reference towards that by pointing out previously that it could also be a Sci-Fi character. Also his drawing style does look like something out of a comic

graphic novel

Explanation:
This is basically just a more highfalutin' version of "comic book" widely used nowadays.
"Graphic novel, in American and British usage, a type of text combining words and images—essentially a comic, although the term most commonly refers to a complete story presented as a book"...

gaudy, comic-strip illustration

Explanation:
The asker herself did suggest 'coming (comic) book'.

Das Kunstwerk 1966 magazine weblink in the Discussion Entries suggests figurative art with satirical caricatures 'modelled' on 'Nazi-stigmatised degenerate' German Expressionist Dada artists like Georg Grosz, Ottox Dix and Max Beckmann and that some of us had earnestly and gravely studied at English uni. on 'novel' French, Spanish & German Humour & Satire Courses.

historiada : gaudy; ornate, Simon & Schuster

agree  Helena Chavarria: I didn't check the meaning of 'historiada'. I assumed it had something to do with 'historia'. Neither had I realised that 'coming' was a typo for 'comic'.

Reference information:
I may be way off the mark, but the text refers to a 'personaje de ilustración historiada', which makes me think of comic strip characters.

A comic strip is a sequence of cartoons, arranged in interrelated panels to display brief humor or form a narrative, often serialized, with text in balloons and captions. Traditionally, throughout the 20th and into the 21st century, these have been published in newspapers and magazines, with daily horizontal strips printed in black-and-white in newspapers, while Sunday papers offered longer sequences in special color comics sections. With the advent of the internet, online comic strips began to appear as webcomics.

Most strips are written and drawn by a comics artist, known as a cartoonist. As the word "comic" implies, strips are frequently humorous. Examples of these gag-a-day strips are Blondie, Bringing Up Father, Marmaduke, and Pearls Before Swine. In the late 1920s, comic strips expanded from their mirthful origins to feature adventure stories, as seen in Popeye, Captain Easy, Buck Rogers, Tarzan, and Terry and the Pirates. In the 1940s, soap-opera-continuity strips such as Judge Parker and Mary Worth gained popularity. Because "comic" strips are not always funny, cartoonist Will Eisner has suggested that sequential art would be a better genre-neutral name.

In comics studies, sequential art is a term proposed by comics artist Will Eisner to describe art forms that use images deployed in a specific order for the purpose of graphic storytelling (i.e., narration of graphic stories) or conveying information. The best-known example of sequential art is comics.

THE EVOLUTION OF SEQUENTIAL ART
While The comic strip may be the most recognisable form of sequential art in today’s world, this art form actually predates comics by millennia. In fact, the human race has been using visuals to convey information or ‘stories’ long before the invention of the written word. Let’s take a brief look at the evolution of sequential art and its various forms throughout history.

-> Perhaps she thought 'historiada' had something to do with illustrated history, not 'illustrated story'. Thank you, AllegroTrans :-)

-> I think AMM is on the right track. I didn't know that 'historiada' means 'muy recargado de adornos o colores mal combinados'.
