ChatGPT and Perplexity answer as follows - problem solved Nov 9, 2025

“Built-in AI translation tools have had a significant impact on my work — both positive and challenging.

On the positive side, these tools have improved efficiency. They allow me to handle large volumes of text faster and focus my time on higher-level tasks like refining tone, ensuring cultural accuracy, and maintaining stylistic consistency. They’re also great for getting a quick first draft or understanding unfamiliar terminology.

However, the rise of built-in AI translation tools has also changed client expectations. Some clients assume that translation is now instant and inexpensive, not realizing that machine outputs often need substantial editing to reach professional quality. This has pushed my role more toward post-editing and quality assurance rather than pure translation.

Ultimately, AI tools have made me adapt. I now use them strategically—as assistants rather than replacements—to enhance productivity while maintaining the human insight, nuance, and cultural understanding that machines still struggle to achieve.”

---
Perplexity:
Built-in AI translation tools have had a profound impact on the work of translators, fundamentally changing daily workflows, expectations, and even the core role of professional translators.
Efficiency and Streamlining
AI-powered translation systems have dramatically increased the speed and efficiency of translation work. Bulk content—such as product descriptions, FAQs, and user-generated material—can now be processed more quickly, and translation memories, glossaries, and real-time machine translation suggestions facilitate faster turnaround times. This allows translators to focus more on nuanced, creative, and culturally sensitive translations rather than repetitive, routine tasks.
Evolving Translator Roles
The role of a human translator is increasingly shifting toward that of an editor or language specialist. Rather than working from scratch, translators start with a machine-generated draft and refine it for style, idiomatic accuracy, cultural appropriateness, and emotional tone. This requires a deep understanding of both languages and cultures, as well as editorial skills, since the translator becomes the final quality assurance (QA) filter.
Quality Improvements and Challenges
AI tools continuously improve in accuracy, thanks to vast amounts of data and better contextual understanding. However, they still struggle with nuance, irony, humor, idiomatic expressions, and culturally sensitive material. For critical content—legal, medical, or creative work—human expertise is indispensable to avoid costly and sometimes dangerous mistakes.
New Opportunities and Pressures
AI tools have expanded the scope and accessibility of translation, enabling faster localization and entry into new markets for businesses. They have also created new opportunities for translators who adapt, such as roles in machine translation post-editing, QA, training AI systems, and developing localization strategies. However, some translators face reduced demand for traditional translation tasks, especially for high-volume, lower paying work that can be automated.
Hybrid Workflows
Many translators now operate within hybrid workflows that combine the best of AI and human expertise, using AI for its speed and humans for their judgement, creativity, and cultural awareness. This collaboration ensures high-quality results while meeting the increased global demand for multilingual content.
Overall, AI translation tools have made professional translation more efficient and globalized, but also require translators to adapt their skill sets towards technology, project management, editing, and cultural consulting.

Translation work has been up and down since the pandemic. I cannot say with any certainty that this is exclusively due to AI (and there is no point in asking AI because it will certainly respond that everything is rosy, despite the rivers of money it has cost so far). I believe that other factors are at play (crises, conflicts, political instability, tariffs, etc.) that cause uncertainty and, consequently, a decrease in demand.

Negative: reduced demand/pricing pressure Nov 10, 2025

In my language pairs, there are now much more MTPE job offers than before. Sometimes double the offers of traditional translation. Due to this, rates have plummeted.

Not to mention that many times the MT is useless and can't be post-edited to make it sound like fluent text written by a native.

Covid and pandemic Nov 10, 2025

I had more working during pandemic than in the last AI year. At the time, they sent various Covid-related texts pertaining to tests, pandemic statistics, vaccines, remote patient interviews, etc. It was definitely not nearly as bad as these AI years.

Built-in AI tools didn’t have an impact on me as I don’t use them. They are such a nuisance. The only time I would use them is if they paid me 2x or 3x my translation rate to use them.

We need "startegies" Nov 12, 2025

By the way, given how things are evolving with AI, translators really do need to start applying some strong strategies to make their value clear!

On a translators’ platform, that typo stands out. We really should read what we publish… unless it was written on purpose.

Perhaps it was reviewed by AI, as it seems "good enough."

AI's "good enough" is the worst plague. Many enterprises are infected with it, but as it's cheap/free, they don't care. The result is tons of "good enough" content downgrading languages, websites, and advertising.

The impact had been negligible Nov 15, 2025

Once upon a time, I abandoned the use of machine translation in any form because it didn't help me with the texts that came my way most of the time. And I've never used generative AI for research (when my browser started showing me AI overview on top of search results, I found an app that disabled this feature). Full human, with CAT. And I've never used generative AI for research (when my browser started showing me AI overview on top of search results, I found an app that disabled this feature). Full human, with CAT. But as I mentioned elsewhere, I'm planning to spend the coming years welding metal. I have a pair of welder's gloves, one red and one yellow. My other red glove got torn, burned through, and shrunk from heat. You never know how long it takes for metal to cool down to tolerable temperatures. Getting tired of not having to come home tired—am I the only person who gets that feeling at times?
