français term

boulettes

français vers anglais Autre Zoologie birds - educational material for elementary/primary school

Discussion

PB Trans (asker) Apr 12, 2007:
Melzie No, that wasn't the intention of my comment. It was to answer Bourth and Richard's comments above (who are perhaps overthinking it a bit??) :-)
Melzie Apr 12, 2007:
both pellets and castings are correct. If you're worried about children understanding castings, both CS Lewis (in Prince Caspian) and more recently JK Rowling, use the term.

PB Trans (asker) Apr 12, 2007:
This is aimed at elementary/primary school children Below the text are drawings of the different bones... vertebrae, tibia, femur, clavicle, etc.
Richard Benham Apr 12, 2007:
How many birds have teeth in their beak or anywhere else for that matter? Besides, not all animals with beaks are birds, what about the platypus?
Bourth (X) Apr 12, 2007:
with which to crush a skull and make it unrecognizable? (but I expect a decent beak can achieve the same result, teeth or no teeth).
Bourth (X) Apr 12, 2007:
"le crâne est facile à reconnaître car le bec ne contient pas de dents". This puzzles me: why bother looking for teeth to determine if it's a bird skull, since if it has a beak, it surely is. No? Or do they mean that the predating bird has no teeth

droppings

found in the droppings. it can mean pellets but droppings are used more for birds. I think.
Peer comment(s):

agree RHELLER : also my understanding

disagree Mary-Ann Marque : droppings doesn't apply to what birds vomit

did someone say this was vomitted ?/and I've even seen them vomit it-I watch Animaux channel all the time.......
disagree Cetacea : droppings come out the other end.. //"boulettes" are indeed vomited, see e.g. http://www.oiseau.info/appareil.digestif.aliments.html

Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : right end, right idea, wrong word. not used in English. pellets or castings http://www.vinsweb.org/raptor-center/pellet-info.html

disagree Cetacea : Where does this term come from? Not from an ornithological source, I bet.

pellets

pellets are smallish balls regurgitated by birds of prey such as owls as a way of getting rid of indigestible animal parts (fur and bones mostly). Definitely not droppings - they come out the other end!!!
