Terme ou expression en français : engloutissement
This has to do with Greek and Egyptian mythology. The word means something along the lines of "gobbling up" but I can't get it to fit in the sentence.
"Donc ce serpent c'est l'archétype du monde de l'engloutissement mais c'est aussi la renaissance.

Accord  Ingeborg Gowans (X): If it refers to the serbent as the origin of sin and evil it is more understandable to think that she"swallowed up the world" in the sense that all people after Adam and Eve are in the sense swallowed up in sin and fallen for the viles of Satan

-> Thank you Ingeborg...I am not sure the notions of sin and evil ,satan, are to be found in Egyptian and Greek mythologies...The serpent swallowing its tail is a universal archetype, the world collapsing and then knowing a new birth...

voracity / engulfing

Explication :
These are just a couple more suggestions for you. Voracity, figuratively, might work - if he's consuming endlessly, can't be satisfied. Engulf would more capture the meaning of his swallowing up massive amounts in one fell swoop.

Or neither...

Good luck, with your good question. It looks like people had fun with it.

monde de l'engloutissement
a world that devours

Explication :
If this is the Egyptian god Apep/Apophis we're talking about, it was the embodiment of absolute evil and darkness in the form of a giant water-snake, waiting each night to swallow Ra's sun-ship when it was crossing the underworld. I would therefore choose to rephrase the whole sentence.

Exemple de phrase(s) :
  • This serpent is thus the archetype of a world that devours, but also gives new birth.

consumption

Explication :
'consumption and rebirth'

or 'annihilation and rebirth' if the context does not require you to keep the ingesting image.

swallowing its tail

Explication :
"The serpent swallowing its tail is the symbol (or archetype) of the world in which things disappear and are forgotten; but it is also a symbol of return and completing a circle, and that is the renaissance (the rediscovery of ancient learning stimulating new discoveries)."

I don't mean to make your sentence longer. The parts in ( ) are just to be understood.

I like all the answers. I wish we had more stuff like this to work on! Hi, all, I'm off to church after staying up all night - it'll be like a 'cathedrale engloutie' for me.

a goog snakey link, that talks about rebirth & renewal as the snake sheds + renews his own skin
http://www.reptileallsorts.com/snake-legends.htm

Also ouroboros, uroborus. The symbol, usually in the form of a circle, of a snake (or dragon) eating its tail.

The Ouroboros is a symbol of renewal, infinity, and the Eternal Return (as in Neitzsche's philosophy and Poincaré's recurrence theorem for systems with finite and bounded phase space

One is eternal return, everything being circular, everything recurring and also of a snake eating its tail, of it devouring itself, which is a more negative context
http://www.millenniumdesktop.co.uk/html/mduk2_ouroboros.htm

whilst the site above talks about the snake devouring itself, there is a concept of 'eternal return' - death & rebirth
