I came aross this term in an English book, don't know what it means.

Explication :
Those are three types of soldiers. Gunners and mitrailleurs are actually slightly different, the former using canoon, the later automatic riffles. Depending on the context it might work though. But we need more of said context.

Accord  Stephanie Benoist: This would explain the mysterious song title "les dragons de nouailles" (always pictured a dragon stepping through heaps of butter noodles, but never remembered to look this up...)

Neutre  B D Finch: Would agree except that "mitrailleurs" are machine gunners. A machine gun is considerably heavier than an automatic rifle and can't be set to fire single shots. Generally operated from a prone position, as too heavy to use standing up.
