it really depends what the purpose of this CV is. If he's applying for a job in the UK, no one will give a fig about this exam (which confers no certificate or diploma, just a training position). I would advise your client to leave it out and just mention the years of training (which discipline and where - not that the latter will have much bearing - what do British docs know about French hospitals?).

On the subject of French doctors' CVs and letterheads. Because obtaining a good place for the "internat" is indeed so competitive, they are very proud of where they did their internat. You will often see "ancien interne de..." on letterheads. In English, doctors don't do this and no one cares.

Note here "interne" = specialist registrar under new NHS system = resident in North America.

Also, "(specialist) registrar" is the translation confirmed by the ITI Medical and Pharmaceutical network, somewhat more authoritative than Kudoz.

I don't think there is any doubt that 1986 is the year he passed the concours d'internat. The French "interne" would be equivalent to senior house officer/registrar (depending on number of years of internat) in the old NHS system. Now called "specialist registrar".

If your translation is for France and French people -- Medical intern, (competitive) exam is excellent as everyone will understand in France. However, if it is for anywhere else in the world -- it would be confusing. Internship happens after (and in some cases in between) medical studies in most cases (except France). Again, competitive exams happens at different times for different medical studies. From the limited context you have provided, I would have translated it as First year of medical school to make it intelligible to all. (Thanks Wolf for understanding!)

No. It's the exam for entry into the "troisième cycle" - internat. After what was once known as the "externat" (clinical years for medical students - still called externat although it doesn't really exist any longer).

is there any chance it could refer to (1) an entry examination to get into med school, or (2) as Gurudutt suggests, the first-year examination (Wikipedia: En réaction, il fut alors instauré en 1971 un concours de fin de première année de médecine)?
