Hmmm. Well, It's easy to see why this is a conundrum. I have noticed that Alain Payan, and rkillings are unusually astute when it comes to finance issues like this.

positions with or without a credit commitment

Assuming this is about a bank. A credit commitment is not a liability in the *accounting* sense, which is why it is not on the balance sheet.

On second thought, you could just say "positions with or without exposure" (to whatever risks are germane, presumably mainly counterparty/credit risk).

'engagement' is common in French where we would say exposure, perhaps because 'exposition' has other usual meanings.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Alain P. : I thought about exposure as well but it would be interesting to have a practical example

thank you
neutral joehlindsay : 'engagement' can, of course, mean liability but also other things. I don't understand how a position could be held 'without liability', have not heard the term used. Be interested to see the details.

I thought about "exposure" as rkillings but as you I wonder what "engagement" means here relating to a trading position
neutral rkillings : The lender becomes liable when he fails to come through on a binding commitment.
