français term
bobine mère
français vers anglais
Technique / Génie
Ingénierie (général)
Packaging machines
Context:
Contrôler l’ensemble des échantillons qui correspondent à un prélèvement, de chaque bobine mère transmis par le fournisseur.
This has been translated as "master coil", but is it a coil, a roll, a reel, a bobbin
My choice is mother roll but if anybody with inside knowledge of the paper industry is out there, confirmation would be appreciated.
TIA Chris.

mother reel
It looks to me as if pretty much anything goes:
3.49.2
mother roll
mother reel
parent roll
parent reel
large roll of tissue paper (3.58), wound up on the winding station, covering either the full width or part of the width of the tissue machine
Note 1 to entry: When the mother reel/roll covers the full width of the machine it is also called a jumbo reel/roll.
[ISO 12625-1:2019(en) Tissue paper and tissue products — Part 1: Vocabulary]
https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#iso:std:iso:12625:-1:ed-3:v1:en
This ISO standard is for tissue paper, however. Things might be different for packaging paper (presumably you are dealing with paper for making corrugated cardboard, etc.).
"MASTER ROLL
Also called a “Mother Reel” or “Mill Roll”, a master roll designates the larger rolls from which thermal laminate films are manufactured in. Slitting, or converting, is the process of reducing a master roll to usable sizes."
https://nobelusuniversity.com/2017/03/12/a-glossary-of-lamin...
This concerns plastic laminates, not creation of multi-layer paper boards
The next example relates to sampling, so in that respect is in line with your text that refers to prélèvements, and concerns 'paper and board' which sounds like packaging material.
"cross direction sample
CD sample
cut from edge to edge of a mother reel or post winder reel in the cross direction (CD), having a width in the machine direction (MD) appropriate for the tests to be carried out
ISO 18522:2016(en) Paper and board — Automated off-line testing of physical properties for CD (cross direction) profiles"
https://dgn.isolutions.iso.org/obp/ui#iso:std:iso:18522:ed-1...
Again, it's an ISO standard whose terminology can at least by justified, even if it might be at odds with the term as she is spoke on the shop floor.

: If anything goes, and 'parent reel' is one of the options, we had that four hours ago.

I'm just the websearcher in this circus, don't expect me to come up with the definitive answer in every case. Apart from that, read to the end.

: Definitely at the paper plant (what comes off the machine before slitting).. Converters may use "master reel/roll/coil" depending on what they make.

: Sorry, but 'spools' are applicable for wires, but not for paper reels. Unfortunately no relevant reference cited.

mother reel
It depends on the larger context of the text.
I have found that mother reel is something like this :
https://ec.europa.eu/ecat/product/en/927719/tissue-paper-and...
As for master roll, it seems more linked to an use inside a printer :
https://en.exploriso.info/exploriso/printing/the-paper-feed-...
I hope it helps.

Example sentence:
\'mother reel\' would seem the correct translation in this case
